Tourism Council goes grassroots

Uncategorized

The Baguio Tourism Council (BTC) is leading the charge in promoting responsible tourism at the grassroots level, starting with a tree-planting activity that literally digs into the ground. BTC Chairperson Gladys Vergara is focused on expanding tourism into the city’s outskirt areas. She expressed her gratitude to the Kapisanan ng Brodkasters ng Pilipinas (KBP) Baguio chapter, led by Rico John Ferrer and Letlet Dela Cruz of 95.9 Big Sound FM, for spearheading this annual environmental initiative called “Oplan Broadcatreeing.” Approximately 100 pine tree saplings were planted, along with an equal number of coffee seeds, in an area designated by the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) as an adopted space for the broadcasters’ group to nurture. Ms. Vergara emphasized that she doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty, as long as the effort contributes to preserving Baguio’s forest cover, which is one of the city’s unique natural charms. “Caring for our forest resources will help instill a love for our natural environment,” she said, highlighting that forest preservation is crucial to conserving Baguio’s assets and attracting more tourists. She stressed that a key part of BTC’s tourism mandate is to preserve Baguio’s forested landscape, a natural attraction for visitors. “Let us persevere in doing our part in caring for our environment,” she urged. “By conserving our natural mountain assets, we can attract more tourists, providing them with opportunities to engage in meaningful activities where they, too, can contribute.” During a visit to another barangay, she reiterated the importance of fostering community care for inclusive socio-economic growth. “Every area in Baguio has the potential for social cohesion and economic development,” she pointed out. “The more we care for our forest resources, the more we can sustain growth and development for everyone.” “Nothing is impossible when we all work together,” she said, underscoring that community bonding can pave the way for collective growth. “Looking ahead, I am committed to intensifying our efforts to develop the limitless tourism potential that Baguio has to offer.” At the end of the day, Gladys recalled that in 2016, she launched a green energy advocacy called “Glad to be Green.” Through this initiative, a solar-electric powered Green Bus tech demonstration was conducted for two months, aiming to achieve the following: Promote the use of solar-electric vehicle technology and educate the public on its benefits. Advocate for zero-emissions and contribute to lowering CO2 concentrations in the central business district. Assist in pedestrianizing and decongesting the central business district. The “Glad to be Green” Bus, an environmentally friendly, zero-emissions public transport initiative, was just one of the many green projects lined up for the city in 2016. It provided free rides, reduced the volume of cars clogging the main thoroughfares, and improved the city’s air quality. “Those were years when the passion to serve reached new heights,” she said, noting that she strongly advocated for renewable energy in 2016 as part of an initiative to mitigate the looming effects of climate change by reducing gas emissions.

Surge of `outsider’ voter registrants in Pugo town protested

Region 1

LA UNION — The reported increasing number of voters from other places registering in Pugo town has alarmed residents, who held a peaceful rally at the municipal office of the Commission on Elections today, August 19. Data released by non-government group Save Pugo Movement shows that from Feb. 12 to Aug. 15 this year, around 2, 487 individuals have applied for transfer of voter’s registration, of which 1, 386 were approved by the local Comelec. Data shows 250 individuals of the 625 applicants have transferred their voter’s registration from Feb. 12 to March 30; 427 out of 858 applicants from April 1 to June 30; and 709 out of 1, 004 from July 1 to Aug. 15. These individuals have transferred their registration in 13 of the 14 barangays of Pugo, which is a fifth-class municipality with 12, 786 registered voters in 2022. Multiple sources claimed many of the individuals applying for transfer of voter’s registration do not even know the names of their supposed punong barangays or kagawads. An urgent appeal was also posted on social media urging concerned offices to act on the alleged rampant illegal voters’ registration in Pugo and nearby Agoo town, also in this province.  “It has come to our attention that there are serious allegations of illegal voter registrations involving numerous flying voters who are not originally from Pugo and Agoo, La Union. This is a grave issue that undermines the integrity of our electoral process and disenfranchises legitimate voters,” reads the statement posted in the Pugo Sumbungan Forum. The statement also urged the Comelec and elected officials accountable for addressing such matters promptly. “It is crucial that they investigate these claims thoroughly and take immediate action to prevent further electoral fraud,” the statement added. The statement also appealed to the public to help address the concern by reporting to the concerned offices and authorities any piece of evidence related to the alleged illegal activities, or file a formal complaint with Comelec.

Region 3

The beauty and wellness industry welcomes a new SME player in the form of ‘Art of Beauty by Lady’ in Tarlac, which harnesses the power of pure fiber broadband to power its social media presence and client relations, aiming to strengthen its presence with both local and international clientele.  The newly-opened small business in San Sebastian, Tarlac is just in its eighth month of operations yet it already accommodates overseas bookings for international clients. “Noong nagstart kami syempre hindi pa kilala ang Art of Beauty, konti pa lang clients at that time.  But in a span of two months, makikita mo na nag-grow yung business, kasi rumarami yung clients na dumadating sa amin even those coming from Pangasinanand La Union and also even from overseas clients.  They booked with us online because they found out andito na kami sa Tarlac, and they’re from New York and Australia. We were able to do this because of our internet connection,” said Lady De Leon, CEO and Owner of Art of Beauty by Lady. Medical tourism has long been a draw in most Southeast Asian countries, with the Philippines also making a bid to make health, wellness, and beauty services as a marketable product to foreign tourists. The English-speaking prowess of medical and beauty professionals in the country is a strong advantage, according to the government. The internet has been a catalyst in enabling this medical tourism sector as more and more local businesses like ‘Art of Beauty by Lady’ reach OFWs and foreign clientele through online platforms. The beauty clinic offers a variety of services including semi-permanent make up, body slimming and contouring, skin whitening, and skin care treatments. All the products used in their services are imported from the US, guaranteeing only the best quality ingredients in their treatments. Aiding them in their day to day operations such as in securing appointments, promoting products and services, and supporting client communication is the fiber powered connection of Converge. “When you’re running a small business, you need a fast and reliable internet connection especially ngayon na nasa digital age tayo where you can do your advertisement and promotion through social media,” said Lady. Such is the trust of Ms. De Leon in the seamless connection that she chose the same provider for her adjacent business in the area, a sports bar named ‘Titos and Titas Sports Hub’. Giving credence to the uninterrupted quality of connection of Converge is the fact that six TVs  in the bar stream games simultaneously for customers – with no lag or downtime. “We offer live streaming of games – basketball games or baseball games and you really need a fast connection kasi anim na tv yon na playing all at once. We already use Converge at home so we made the decision to use it in our business as well because we’re satisfied with the service,” the entrepreneur explained. SM Art Market, a success for Cordilleran Artists

Lifestyle

The art exhibit conducted by the Pasakalye Group of Artists at SM City Baguio is considered a historic and successful event for Cordilleran artists in keeping with the promotion as a UNESCO creative city, as hope of being showcased in other SM malls is high. More than 400 art works from 99 talented artists, whether professional or novice, were displayed from July 31 to August 13 at the Atrium Event Center, just proof of SM’s support to the creative sector expand their talents and lead the way to also give other artists the opportunity to hold an exhibit. Black and White Artist Student artist Edria Partosan Sevilla, 21, is now famous for her black and white artwork, which is often the life size of celebrities and well-known personalities. “Actually I love minimal designs, then the black and white one was inspired by stencil arts, but I looked at acrylic paint instead of the real stencil during the pandemic. I tried it as an experiment by making a black and white painting, mostly whatI do now are life size,” Sevilla said. Some of her life size art works are national artist Apo Whang-od which he displayed in Tam-awan Village, and was immediately sold. The face of Bob Marley, Cup of Joe, Efren “Bata” Reyes, which mostly has dimensions of 3x4x5 feet. Although only small art works were displayed in SM City Baguio, Sevilla also participated with small and colored works. “It’s not my first time to do color, even though I really like black and white, but when the exhibit requires color and the theme is renaissance, I did it to grab the opportunity to join the exhibit. ” Three National Artists stuck together on one canvas, Apo Whang-od, Ben Cabrera of Bencab Museum and Kidlat Tahimik, with the title Cordillera Living Legend, featured in the exhibit and a black and white with the title ‘Enchantress”. The said Cordillera Living Legend canvas painting made of acrylic is among the Top 10 in his exhibit at Camp John Hay. Professional Artist One of Pasakalye’s skilled artists is Carmen Jean Villanueva, whose masterpieces are paintings made in Fluid Art, Abstract, Figurative and Pyrography. For the first time she was proud of his creation Gaze of a Goddess artworks, which is called Art Nouveau, a woman’s face, which seems to be alive in its shape and used acrylic. “Most of the art nouveau paintings are actually women. I love painting women, of course because women always represent strength, Strength but then a woman is still soft. Soft but strong, a woman is resilient, so that’s why I love painting women. This is my first painting with a face and this is self-taught, nobody taught me and I will also do pyrography. Most of the artists here are self-taught,” said Villanueva. Villanueva started drawing when she was young, but she really started doing artwork full-time was when she joined Pasakalye in 2021. “What’s nice about Pasakalye, when you’re a member of Pasakalye and join the exhibit, they make you think out of the box. They bring you out of your comfort zone. Like they know, I’m an abstract artist and yet they still made me do a realism. “With Pasakalye I also grew as an artist, because again, they make you go out of your comfort zone to try other medium, to try other styles, not just to stay in your comfort zone,” said Villanueva. Small but great artist Zylan Yvonne Blando, 24, who is also fond of abstract painting, which she started in March 2024, shared a different talent in the field of visual arts. “I started drawing nature, I experimented with a different kind of abstract, I also do photography, then I make it into an art. I became interested in it after my graduation in Hospitality Management, and I made it a hobby, while I was looking for a job,” said Blando. According to Blando, she started making art in 8×8 size. The first art she made was bought by his Aunt, who also participated in the exhibit at Porta Vaga and at the SM Art Market. Of the 12 acrylic artworks she has created since March, six have been purchased, including a display at SM. “I would like to thank them for giving Pasakalye recognition here at SM City Baguio to market our artworks and also for giving us the opportunity to showcase the local talents of Baguio City. When I first met Mam Maricar, that’s when I started exploring medium art,” said Blando. Hobbyist Artist Leopold Ludan, a native of Baguio City and currently working in Quezon City, said that painting is still part of his life as an artist, which he started when he was in elementary school until college. Although he is a regular government employee, he does not forget to make paintings to participate in exhibits and be recognized as a great artist. It proudly displayed in its second exhibit at SM City Baguio, an acrylic arts of a Wolf with the title Territorial which went with a P10,000 price. “I started painting and participated in exhibits in 2021, then three straight exhibits, after that, I was gone for one year, but now I’m coming back. When I was in elementary school, I was inclined to make art only through water color, in high school I also continued to make art until I was in college and now even though I have a job, I participate in exhibits,” said Ludan. The first thing I do is focus on the subject I want to happen, then I will play with him in the end. I drew first and looked for good references, but not exactly from the reference, I made changes from the reference according to my own taste.” Pointing at one of his, works, he said “Like this art work, it is territorial, I played with it and it came from my mind and I painted it with acrylic.” According to Ludan, during the pandemic he had

Baguio City

By Aileen P. Refuerzo BAGUIO CITY — The exemption of private motor vehicles transporting senior citizens of the city to and from clinics, hospitals or place of work from the city’s number coding scheme will be put on experimental run starting today, August 19. Mayor Benjamin Magalong issued Executive Order No. 82-2024 setting the schedule of the traffic experiment which aims to determine the effects of the exemption contained in a proposed ordinance of the city council. The experiment will be done in two phases – the first to run from Aug. 19 to Oct. 18 covering vehicles being driven by the senior citizens coming to and from medical facilities and workplaces; and second from Oct. 22 to Nov. 22 for vehicles whether private or taxi units ferrying senior citizens to health facilities or workplaces even if the driver is not a senior citizen. To be able to avail of the exemption, seniors aged at least 𝟔𝟎 years old whether male or female must have proofs of Baguio City residency, senior citizen status and purpose of travel such as valid IDs proving residency, senior citizen status or documentary proofs of medical appointments or check-ups or if working, ID showing the place of work. Traffic enforcers appealed for senior citizens to be patient and cooperative when signaled to stop. Ordinance No. 40, series of 2024 further amending Section 6 of Ordinance No. 1, series of 2003 or the Baguio Number Coding Scheme as amended by Ordinance No. 31, series of 2004 and Ordinance No. 107, series of 2008 to exempt motor vehicles transporting senior citizens who are residents of the city, either as driver or passengers, to and from a medical clinic, hospital or place of work from the city’s number coding scheme was approved by the city council recently. Magalong however vetoed the ordinance to allow the conduct of a proper traffic impact study like the traffic experiment to gather data to determine its effect on our overall traffic situation.
