Magalong clarifies issue on picture-taking at Lion Head

Baguio City

By Rose Frejane A. Cruz BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Mayor Benjamin Magalong clarified that taking pictures at Lion Head on Kennon Road is not completely prohibited, but rather vehicles that stop right in front to take pictures that cause traffic on the road are prohibited. According to Magalong, there is a designated parking area not far from Lion Head, so tourists are not prohibited from taking pictures at the area. He said, “It depends on the traffic flow, if there are really many vehicles going up and down, it is really forbidden to stop their vehicles in the middle of the road or on the side just to take pictures, because it is an obstruction to the flow of traffic.” Due to the criticism on social media regarding the tarpaulin placed in front of Lion Head, it has been removed, instead motorists are allowed to take pictures, but must park in the designated parking area. The assignment of police officers to the area to guide motorists is in line with DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla’s directive on March 31 to strictly implement zero-obstruction policies, especially along Kennon Road, where many motorists stop for picture taking, causing heavy traffic in the area. According to Magalong, the policy is in line with Secretary Remulla’s general guidance, and it is up to the discretion of the traffic controller in the area, who if it is really loose and parks in the parking area, can go to the landmark itself and take pictures. “We just need discipline from our motorists so that they don’t have to deal with traffic on the road, so I appeal to our tourists who will be passing through Kennon Road to avoid stopping right in front of the landmark so as not to obstruct the flow of traffic and to those who want to take pictures of the Lion Head use the parking area so as not to obstruct the traffic around it.” Kennon Road is the closest road with 33km to and from Baguio City, which is a great relief given the ever-increasing price of gasoline.

Environment

For the second consecutive year, Globe was named Most Sustainable Mobile Network and Most Active Mobile Network for the Environment at the 2026 Consumer Choice Awards by Standard Insights, reinforcing its leadership in responsible technology and sustainable business practices. The recognition, along with Excellence in Digital Literacy and Safety, also marks the fourth time Globe has been honored for sustainability by Standard Insights. The Standard Insights Consumer Choice Awards is a research-driven recognition program based in New York, USA that honors brands across industries based on consumer sentiment and data. These wins signal that environmental, social, and governance performance has become a decisive factor in the Philippine telco landscape. As the Philippines remain at risk to climate change, consumers are recognizing providers that demonstrate environmental action, such as the use of renewable energy. The nationwide survey, which gathered insights from over a thousand Filipino mobile subscribers, highlighted the critical role of trust: 70.5 percent of respondents rely on a single mobile plan for all their connectivity needs. When one provider carries nearly every aspect of a person’s digital life, trust, reliability, and responsible business practices become non-negotiable factors in consumer choice. “We endeavor to give more for our customers when they use the Globe network,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at Globe. “Globe considers its impact on the environment, how it protects people online, and how it contributes to national progress. We use the latest advanced technology to provide more convenience and better value for money for our customers.” Globe’s commitment to sustainability practices is anchored on science-based targets, as the first publicly listed Philippine company to secure validation and approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term and net-zero greenhouse gas reduction targets. This ambition also makes Globe a Climate Action Faster Forward participant in the UN Global Compact. The company’s broader ESG agenda also covers circularity through its Trade-In Program and various social impact initiatives such as GoGIVE and social impact initiatives under Globe of Good. Beyond ESG-related recognitions, Globe also secured the following awards in the Standard Insights’ survey: – Best Mobile Network in the Philippines – Best Network Coverage – Best Internet Speed – Most Competitive and Affordable Prices and Fees – Most Reliable Network Signal – Best Ads, Marketing Campaigns, and Brand Identity As the industry evolves, Globe’s continued recognition signals that responsible connectivity has become central to how Filipinos define value and leadership in the digital age.

La Union’s sustainable tourism logs 518K visitors in 2025

Region 1

By Chester Carlo M. Trinidad   LA UNION, Philippines (PIA) — The province of La Union recorded 518,937 tourist arrivals in 2025, reflecting the growing impact of sustainable tourism on local economies and communities. The La Union Provincial Tourism Office said the strong turnout highlights the province’s efforts to promote responsible travel—balancing visitor growth with environmental protection and cultural preservation. Tourism remained a key economic driver, generating an estimated P1.02 billion in receipts, benefiting local businesses, workers, and community-based enterprises. The province’s approach aligns with the broader push for sustainable tourism development in the Philippines. The municipality of San Juan, known for its surfing industry, recorded the highest number of visitors at 184,762. It was followed by San Fernando City, with 134,181 arrivals, and Bauang, with 81,146. These areas continue to attract tourists due to their accessibility, established accommodations, and diverse tourism activities. Visitor arrivals peaked from March to May, driven by the summer season and school breaks. To spread tourism gains beyond major hubs, the provincial government is promoting emerging destinations such as the waterfalls of San Gabriel and Pugo, as well as cultural and heritage sites across inland towns. Tourists are also encouraged to explore local traditions, including the Abel weaving in Bangar and historical landmarks, such as the Baluarte Watch Tower in Luna. Officials said expanding tourism destinations helps distribute economic opportunities while reducing pressure on heavily visited areas. With its sustained growth, La Union is positioning itself as a model for inclusive and sustainable tourism development, supporting national efforts to strengthen the tourism sector while protecting natural and cultural resources. Baguio Lion Head covered with tarpaulin to avoid traffic

Baguio City

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – Tourists traveling along Kennon Road to and from Baguio City will no longer be able to see the famous Lion Head, as a tarpaulin has been placed in front of it, today, April 7. The action is in response to DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla’s call on local officials on March 31 to strictly implement zero-obstruction policies, especially along Kennon Road, where many motorists stop here for picture taking, causing heavy traffic in the area. This measure was taken because despite the police ban during the Holy Week, tourist motorists could not stop at the area and take pictures, which allegedly caused traffic along Kennon Road. According to the police, the installation of the tarpaulin is to prevent visitors from taking pictures, which is causing heavy traffic on the road, especially now during the Summer Vacation when more tourists are expected. According to a vendor in the area, they have suffered a huge loss in their livelihoods, relying solely on tourists stopping by the area now that Lion Head has been covered, as no one will buy their goods. She said, “Last year, when Kennon Road was closed for a long time and impassable due to a landslide, we were unable to make a living and now, in the summer we were expecting and there were few visitors due to the fuel crisis, this is what happened, how can we do this?” the vendor, who did not want to be named, said. The 40-foot Lion’s Head monument on Kennon Road is a sight that attracts thousands of visitors to Baguio City. It was built by the Baguio Lions Club in 1960 and formally inaugurated to the public in 1972. Since then, this place has become one of the city’s tourist destinations and tourists have become a souvenir to take pictures of at this place. (SJ)

She said the provincial government aims to attract aviation schools, tourism-related enterprises, food and beverage operators, logistics providers, and other businesses compatible with airport operations. Judith Asuncion, head of the Provincial Cooperative and Enterprise Development Office (PROCEDE), said the proposal has already been recommended for approval by Catalyste+ Philippines and forwarded to the organization’s main office in Canada for final review. PROCEDE is the provincial government’s lead office in coordinating Catalyste+-supported projects in Nueva Vizcaya. Gambito said the activation of Bagabag Airport remains one of his administration’s key priorities. “The activation of Bagabag Airport is one of our key priorities because it will not only boost tourism in Nueva Vizcaya, but also help drive the local economy, create more opportunities for our people, and improve connectivity not only in Cagayan Valley but even to neigboring regions”, the governor said. Funded by Global Affairs Canada, Catalyste+ provides technical assistance, capacity building, and investment facilitation to support private sector-led and inclusive economic growth in partner countries. Its services include market assessments, project development, and stakeholder engagement.

Holy Week observance ‘generally peaceful’ in Naga City

Region 5

NAGA CITY, Philippines — The observance of Holy Week in Naga City was “generally peaceful,” according to Police Col. Gilbert Fariñas, city director of the Naga City Police Office and Incident Commander of the Incident Management Team (IMT) activated for the Lenten season. The city government, under the leadership of Mayor Leni Robredo, continues to advance its campaign for peaceful and safe communities, a key priority outlined in her “2028 Finish Lines.” Robredo has emphasized strengthened collaboration among law enforcement personnel, emergency responders, and communities, alongside proactive measures such as intensified crime prevention, improved disaster preparedness, and accessible public safety services to ensure that every Nagueño enjoys a secure and resilient environment. Fariñas said religious activities within the city proceeded without major untoward incidents following the activation of the IMT on March 30, 2026. The team is expected to be demobilized on April 5. Police records showed minimal incidents during the period, including one arrest for theft and eight vehicular accidents. Authorities also recovered a missing motorcycle and arrested one individual for violation of Republic Act No. 9165. Medical teams deployed in key areas also attended to minor cases such as seizures, body weakness, and vomiting. Patients were provided the necessary interventions, including blood pressure monitoring, tetanus shots, and first aid for minor injuries like abrasions. Fariñas noted that no injuries were reported in upland barangays, although police operations such as Oplan Sita and checkpoint monitoring remain ongoing as part of sustained anti-criminality efforts. On Easter Sunday, police assistance desks, medical personnel, and Bureau of Fire Protection units were stationed in major convergence areas to ensure public safety. Ambulances were also on standby for immediate response. Two separate fire incidents were reported on Saturday, April 4, including a garbage fire near a church and another blaze in a mall parking area, authorities said. The first incident, classified as a garbage fire, broke out at around 3:30 p.m. on a vacant lot in front of the Immaculate Concepcion Church in Barangay Concepcion Pequeña. The City Tactical Operations Center (CTOC) received the report at 4:04 p.m. on the same day. Earlier, at around 2:10 p.m., another fire incident occurred at the basement parking area of 101 Mall in Barangay Tabuco. Authorities said that, after investigation, the time of occurrence was placed at 2:50 p.m., while the CTOC logged the report at 3:25 p.m. Details on the causes of the fires and the extent of damage were not immediately available as of this writing. Authorities continue to monitor fire incidents and remind the public to observe safety precautions, especially during the dry season. The police also recorded an incident at the Holy Cross Parish in Barangay Tabuco, wherein two individuals were reportedly rushed to the Bicol Medical Center after a speaker from a public address system fell onto them. Fariñas urged the public to follow authorities’ instructions and avoid bringing unnecessary valuables when attending religious activities. He also emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, especially for the elderly and children. The police official likewise reminded IMT members, particularly those in the medical and law enforcement clusters, to remain alert and committed in delivering public service throughout the Lenten period.
