El Nido among BBC’s top-recommended beach escapes in the world

Region 4, Tourism / Health

The Department of Tourism (DOT) welcomes the inclusion of El Nido, Palawan, in the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) list of eight best beach escapes in the world, an encouraging recognition amid rising fuel costs and broader global economic uncertainties affecting travel behavior.   This distinction reaffirms El Nido’s enduring appeal as a classic go-to destination, offering world-class natural beauty and meaningful travel experiences that continue to inspire visitors from around the globe. Offering both adventure and relaxation, El Nido has been a favorite tropical attraction for travelers craving for its pristine white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and breathtaking limestone cliffs. DOT Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Secretary Verna Buensuceso highlighted that the citation only reinforces Palawan’s global acclaim, bannering it as a premier tourist spot for exciting travel experiences. “Citations such as these affirm the beauty and prestige of the many treasures that we boast to the world. This recognition proves that El Nido, like our other coastal destinations, can offer the same level of quality vacations as our global counterparts,” OIC-Secretary Buensuceso said. Hidden Gems BBC journalist Francis Augustin, who has personally visited El Nido with his peers, specifically praised the coastal destination for the wide range of water activities that could be done to explore the island’s hidden beaches and lagoons. “My family, friends, and I booked a tour with a local speedboat crew, spending the day cutting across the crisp blue waters of Bacuit Bay in search of secluded beaches and lagoons. Among these limestone island clusters, we swam, kayaked, and snorkelled before anchoring in a solitary beach cove where our guides set up a meal of traditional Filipino meat and seafood dishes,” the article reads. Augustin was also all praises for other beaches in El Nido’s mainland, including Las Cabanas, Lio, and Corong Corong, where travelers can dip, sit back, and enjoy the golden sunset. Apart from these traditional island experiences, the DOT is also strengthening El Nido’s position as an emerging cruise tourism spot following the recent port of call of the luxury liner MV Luminara in the coastal town this January. Carrying over 200 tourists onboard, the cruise visit provided a gateway for travelers to explore other parts of Palawan, including Coron and Puerto Princesa. A result of a stringent selection process, the BBC’s recommendation list banks on firsthand experiences of the broadcast company’s own writers, trusted travel enthusiasts, and leading sustainable travel authorities. The list favors unconventional, under-touristed, and sustainable destinations that allow visitors to both relax and engage authentically with locals and communities. El Nido now joins other world powerhouse beach destinations in New York, Italy, Puerto Rico, India, St. Maarten, Scotland, and Tasmania. (By DOT)

Baguio Chess Squad strikes gold in Batang Pinoy

Sports

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — The Summer Capital’s Team Blitz 14 Years Old squad composed of Meijer Juro Cabotaje, Cheldi Vallejo, Mary Grace Valdez, and Yellowrain Alfonso, captured the gold medal in chess at the Batang Pinoy 2025 National Championships in General Santos City. In a sport often seen as solitary, these young athletes proved that unity, encouragement, and shared preparation can transform individual battles into collective victory. For Vallejo, the journey began with familiarity and excitement since having played alongside his teammates in past tournaments, he felt comfortable and motivated. “I already knew my teammates because we always played in the same tournaments… it was comfortable knowing I’d be with the same people again,” he said. Valdez echoed this, recalling playful banter and friendly conversations that kept the group close, while Alfonso admitted he was nervous at first but quickly bonded with the team through chess itself. On the other hand, Cabotaje, who had long competed with them in Baguio, emphasized how training together deepened their connection and that the gold medal meant more than just a prize. “It was not just about getting a medal. It showed that all our hard work, training, and sacrifices were worth it… we proved that when we trust each other and work as one team, we can achieve great things,” he said. Valdez added that the victory gave them confidence against stronger, titled players, while Alfonso described the pride of making his family happy. Vallejo said the joy of seeing their preparation pay off, especially as the team hyped each other up on the way to gold because although chess is played individually, the team found ways to support each other. Vallejo recalled giving advice after games and reminding teammates not to lose confidence and Cabotaje described how they encouraged one another before every round and shared ideas afterward while Alfonso stressed the mental support, saying, “We told each other it’s okay to lose and to just do our best.” Valdez remembered moments when sickness struck the team, yet they carried each other through even in small acts like fetching water or cheering from the sidelines and these gestures of solidarity became their hidden strength. The team’s mindset was simple yet powerful: stay steady, stay focused, and enjoy the game as Vallejo explained, “Our mindset was to stay steady and not get carried away even if we won.” Cabotaje added, “We told ourselves to take one game at a time and not be afraid of strong opponents.” Valdez pointed out their coach’s advice to focus on the game itself rather than the medal, which helped them avoid pressure and fear while Alfonso shared that even if they didn’t win, they were determined to enjoy the experience and make friends. From this golden run, the team learned discipline, patience, and the importance of encouragement as Vallejo stressed that consistency and support make a big difference while Cabotaje highlighted teamwork and positivity, while Valdez pointed out the value of communication and trust. Alfonso summed it up simply: “We needed to trust each other and have good coordination.” These lessons, they believe, will carry them into future competitions with greater strength as the team hopes their victory will fuel greater ambitions in the future. “I hope the victory reminds us that we can achieve more if we stay disciplined and consistent,” Vallejo said as Cabotaje added, “I hope it motivates us to stay focused, support each other, and never give up.” Valdez expressed high hopes that the win will inspire them to defeat stronger opponents in national games, while Alfonso kept it heartfelt: “I hope that we will win our next gold together pa rin as a team.” The Batang Pinoy 2025 chess champions showed that even in a game of individual moves, the power of friendship, encouragement, and unity can turn pressure into triumph as their story is proof that in chess and in life, teamwork can be the ultimate winning strategy. – Diana Badia Florague/PIO Baguio Intern/gabykeith

Globe joins Candle Submarine Cable System consortium to strengthen the Philippines connectivity backbone

Business

Globe has formally joined the Candle Cable System consortium, a regional collaboration led by Meta, SoftBank Corp., IPS Inc., TM, PT XLSmart Telecom Sejahtera Tbk, and NEC Corporation. The group is building an 8,000-kilometer, 24-fiber-pair submarine cable system linking Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The system is expected to begin operations in 2028 and will provide up to 570 terabits per second of total capacity, placing it among the highest-capacity systems in the region. Globe joins the consortium as both investor and landing party. The cable will be delivered to Globe’s Nasugbu Cable Landing Station in Batangas, complementing the Philippine landing in Baler. Together, the West and East coast landings strengthen national resilience against typhoons, earthquakes, and other natural hazards, reducing single points of failure and reinforcing business continuity. “Candle raises the bar for the country’s digital backbone,” said KD Dizon, Vice President and Head of Globe Business. “With the Nasugbu and Baler landings, we are giving enterprises a more resilient path for cloud workloads, AI development, and global operations. Businesses cannot afford uncertainty, so our focus is on infrastructure that stays ready even when conditions are tough. This investment reflects our commitment to help Filipino companies compete and grow in a fast-moving digital world.” Candle uses a 24-fiber-pair configuration that delivers higher capacity and lower latency. This scale supports the rapid growth of cloud computing, artificial intelligence development, and enterprise digitalization across Asia Pacific. A direct route to Japan and Singapore places the Philippines closer to key AI and cloud hubs, improving performance for mission-critical workloads. Raymond Policarpio, Vice President and Head of Strategy Management and Business Investments at Globe, emphasized that global reach must translate into local value. “International capacity is only one part of the equation. The real advantage comes from integrating the Candle Cable System directly into our extensive domestic fiber network. By linking this international capacity into our nationwide infrastructure, we ensure that high-speed and low-latency connectivity supports enterprises, small businesses, and mobile and broadband customers across the archipelago.” The Candle Cable System supports the growing need for high-capacity routes that enable advanced analytics, cross-border collaboration, and cloud-based operations. This aligns with the Philippine government’s digitalization and Cloud First direction, which calls for diversified subsea paths and stronger international gateways. Globe’s participation covers planning, financing, and construction of the new landing branch in Nasugbu, reinforcing its long-term commitment to building a more competitive and digitally capable Philippines.

Kaya batay sa mga iyon, nagpapasya kami sa disenyo ng aming mga istruktura at sa master plan ng aming probinsya.” (Street Journal)

Local artisans integrate faith, art, and industry in PH carving capital

Region 4

By Anna Diana Mole   LAGUNA, Philippines — In the quiet town of Paete in Laguna, the sound of chisels striking wood echoes like a prayer; it is steady, deliberate, and filled with meaning. Here, where artistry is both heritage and identity, faith is not only spoken in churches but also carved into life through skilled hands and generations of devotion. As the solemn observance of Holy Week begins, Paete once again transforms into a living gallery of sacred art. Detailed carved images of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and saints emerge from pieces of wood, each piece carrying the weight of tradition and the depth of Catholicism. Recognized as the “Carving Capital of the Philippines,” Paete’s legacy dates back to colonial times, when early artisans began crafting religious icons for churches and communities across the country. Over time, wood carving became more than an economic activity as it evolved into a cultural and spiritual identity deeply rooted in the town’s daily life. For wood carver Arnel Fadul who has been carving for almost half of his life, Holy Week is more than just a season, it is a blessing that sustains both their faith and their livelihood. “During Holy Week, we don’t run out of work, especially with religious items we carved. With so many sacred images being brought out in processions here, our tradition is truly unique—that’s why people should visit the town of Paete.” Behind every religious image Fadul carved is a story of his long hours, patient hands, and unwavering devotion. Each curve of the wood, each delicate detail, reflects not only artistic mastery but a deep reverence for faith passed down through generations. And as the town prepares for Lenten processions that will fill the streets with solemn beauty, another quiet miracle unfolds as people from all walks of life arrive, drawn to Paete’s living tradition. “It’s a big help for us because more people support our products, especially during Holy Week, now that Paete is widely known as a center of wood carving,” Fadul said.   Despite the rise of factory-made religious items, Paete’s artisans remain committed to preserving their meticulous craft which inspired Fadul to involve younger generations. From simply watching him at work, his child learned the art of carving, picking up the patience, skill, and devotion that each piece demands. “I have a child who knows how to carve. I didn’t formally teach them, and they learned just by watching us. It makes me happy, it’s a blessing for our family and for Paete because it’s a good thing that wood carving here in our town will never fade because there’ll be the next generation who knows how to carve,” Fadul said. This organic passing of knowledge, from parent to child, is what keeps Paete’s identity intact as the world rapidly shifts toward modernity; the persistence of such traditions offers a grounding sense of continuity. And so, as candles are lit and prayers rise this Holy Week, Paete offers something more than devotion—it offers a glimpse of a community where faith is tangible, where tradition is alive, and where every piece of carved wood carries the faith of their town. Domogan pushes for segregation of 13 barangays from Camp John Hay Reservation

Baguio City

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – Congressman Mauricio Domogan announced that the Bases Conversion and Development Authority will support the more than three-decade-old issue of segregation of 13 barangays falling within the Camp John Reservation under the 19 Conditionalities contained in Resolution No. 362 of the city government in 1994. Under House Bill No. 6437 filed by Domogan on November 27, 2025, the segregation of 13 barangays: Hillside, Camp 7, Country Club, Greenwater Village, Happy Hollow, Loakan Apugan, Loakan-Liwanag, Loakan Proper, Upper Dagsian, Lower Dagsian, Lucnab, Sta. Scholastica and Scout Barrio, from the Camp John Hay Reservation covered by Republic Act No. 7227. The said bill, as amended, converting them to alienable and disposable public land and declaring the same open for the disposition to bonafide qualified occupants and or applicants under Republic Act No. 730 or RA No.10023. According to Domogan, “During our previous hearing on March 19, before we recessed in Congress, the BCDA agreed that they would support my bill to exclude the 13 barangays from John Hay Reservation, so that’s a big deal.” He said, BCDA President Joshua Bingcang was also said to have committed to focus on and discuss with BCDA officials and city government officials, including Domogan, to iron out those issues contained in the 19 conditionalities. “There are many issues that need to be resolved, first of all in the preparation of the John Hay Master Development Plan is related to the bill excluding 13 barangays because it must be reflected in the development plan. Bingcang is grateful for the bill we have passed, because it will also somewhat determine the preparation of the master development plan,” Domogan said. Although the entire text is extensive, the 19 conditions cover five main pillars: Environment, Economy, Governance, Social Justice and Infrastructure. The main ones being proposed are Condition 9 (Revenue Sharing), where Baguio City is entitled to a specific share of the gross income: 3% for National Government, 3% for Baguio City and 1% for community development. Condition 14 (Land & Housing), the segregation of 13 barangays currently within the reservation so they can be titled to actual occupants; (Environment), strict protection of the Pine forest, a ban on cutting trees without city permits and maintaining at least 25% open space. Social Rules (2), a strict ban on gambling and casinos within CJH reservation and Condition No.66 (Reversion), all developed properties and improvements must revert to the city government upon the expiration of the lease. Although BCDA has regained control of the camp from the private developer CHJDevco, the Baguio City government led by Mayor Benjamin Magalong has expressed frustration with the long-standing discussions on the issues, especially the million-peso rental of CJH in the city. According to Domogan, given the development he sees in these issues, it is only right to have good discussions to resolve them immediately. “We hope that the next discussions between BCDA will have good results, not only on segregation, but also on all the conditions contained in the 19 conditionalities.” (By Zaldy Comanda)

Camarines Norte cancel 2026 Bantayog Festival

Region 5

By Rosalita Manlangit   DAET, Camarines Norte (PIA), Philippines — The provincial government of Camarines Norte has officially canceled all activities for the Camarines Norte Bantayog Festival 2026 due to the ongoing fuel crisis. Acting Governor Joseph Ascutia announced that the move aims to safeguard essential services and redirect resources to address this urgent situation. He said that suspending the festival celebrations is necessary to prioritize public welfare. The Bantayog Festival 2026 was scheduled to be held in Camarines Norte from April 5 to May 17, 2026. This period typically sees an increase in resident and tourist arrivals due to the Holy Week celebrations and summer vacations. Acting Provincial Tourism Officer Jennelyn David reported that in April 2025, there were 96,881 local and 120 foreign visitors, while in May 2025, there were 95,907 local and 131 foreigners. Despite the festival’s cancellation, several activities will still be organized by the private sector, with the provincial government offering support in promotions and marketing, but not funding any events. Among the private-sponsored activities are the Bantayog Talisay Triathlon, CamNorte Models, CineCamNorte, CamNorte Pickleball, Kaogmahan sa Bagasbas, Queens of Bantayog, Oryol Group Oil Hike, Carshow, Beach Volleyball, Beyblade, Grand Tambike by Royce, Agri Marathon, and Farmers and Fisherfolk Week. Amelia Benitez, a 52-year-old resident of Barangay Lag-on, Daet, Camarines Norte, expressed her thoughts on the festival’s cancellation. “It’s for the best that the Bantayog Festival was canceled because the cost of goods has risen due to fuel prices, making it difficult for us to earn a living. I hope the allocated funds will instead be distributed to those of us who are struggling,” she said. Benitez, who has been a stall owner for 30 years selling fishballs, snacks, and drinks near the provincial capitol, typically earns between P1,000 and P5,000 per day during Bantayog Festival events, a significant increase compared with the P100 to P200 she makes on regular days. She remains hopeful that the situation will improve, allowing her to earn well again in future Bantayog Festivals. Danica Lean Esplana, a 22-year-old with a physical disability in her hand, also shared her views. “It’s okay that the Bantayog Festival activities won’t take place if the allocated funds are used to provide aid to people like us who have disabilities and those with illnesses,” she said. She added that what matters most is preserving the culture. Esplana suggested that the government could organize low-cost activities, such as a fun run or other events, that would serve as reminders of the province’s heritage and origins.
