Ilocos Norte enhances travel incentives amid rising transport costs

Region 1

By Mary Therese D. Ancheta   LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte, Philippines (PIA) — The Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte is expanding its tourism recovery initiatives by enhancing travel incentives ahead of the summer peak season, aiming to sustain visitor arrivals and support local livelihoods amid rising transportation costs. To respond to increasing travel expenses driven by global economic pressures, the provincial government earlier launched a free ride initiative in April. The program was designed to ease transportation costs and improve mobility for tourists exploring destinations across Ilocos Norte. The initiative forms part of the province’s efforts to make travel more accessible, particularly for budget-conscious visitors and commuters affected by higher transport fares. Building on the initial rollout, the Ilocos Norte Tourism Office is preparing to expand its Travel Incentive Program into a two-way travel incentive scheme. The enhanced program will introduce subsidized routes to improve connectivity among key tourism sites and encourage wider visitor movement across the province. Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos said the province continues to adopt adaptive strategies to sustain tourism growth despite external economic pressures. She emphasized the importance of proactive governance in ensuring that tourism remains resilient and accessible. Preliminary tourism data show steady visitor arrivals in northern municipalities, while some urban and commercial centers continue to experience lower tourist traffic. The expanded incentive scheme aims to address this imbalance by encouraging tourists to explore a broader range of destinations, helping distribute economic activity more evenly across the province. The provincial government said the program is part of a broader strategy to strengthen tourism resilience and sustain economic activity during the peak summer season. By improving accessibility and visitor flow, the initiative is expected to benefit tourism-dependent communities, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) engaged in hospitality, transport, and local trade. Visitors have welcomed the initiative, citing improved affordability and convenience. A tourist from Mountain Province, Angeline Kafuyao, said the program encourages repeat visits due to reduced travel costs and improved accessibility. “These kinds of programs are really a big help for tourists. We’re more encouraged to visit again because travel to Ilocos Norte has become more affordable and convenient despite the crisis,” she said. With these expanded measures, Ilocos Norte aims to position itself as a model for adaptive provincial tourism governance, ensuring that destinations remain accessible, economically active, and visitor-friendly even amid ongoing global challenges. Over 4,400 tricycle drivers in Sorsogon City receive cash grant from DSWD

Region 5

By Benilda Recebido   SORSOGON CITY, Sorsogon, Philippines (PIA) — A total of 4,439 tricycle drivers from Sorsogon City have benefited from cash assistance provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) from April 8 to 9 at the Provincial Gymnasium. The DSWD allocated around P22.19 million in financial aid under its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program, with each beneficiary receiving P5,000. The tricycle drivers in Sorsogon City represent the largest group of registered drivers in Sorsogon province. On the first day of distribution, 2,029 drivers were accommodated, and 2,410 were served on the second day. According to Joseph Teston, chief of the DSWD regional office’s policy and plans division, the recipients are members of Tricycle Operators and Drivers Associations (TODAs), as verified and endorsed by local government units to the DSWD. “The assistance aims to alleviate the daily expenses of drivers and support their livelihoods amid rising fuel prices caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East,” Teston said. He added that the payout is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to support transport workers in the Bicol region. The AICS program is a government initiative designed to provide immediate and temporary assistance to individuals and families affected by crises. Among the recipients was John Darill Aniban, a father and tricycle driver from Barangay Macabog, who lamented that the recent increase in oil prices has significantly reduced his daily earnings. “The higher fuel costs leave me with much less income after a long day of work. Almost everything goes toward buying fuel, and what I bring home to my family is no longer enough, unlike before,” Aniban explained. He thanked the DSWD and local government for efficiently distributing financial assistance to the transport sector, saying, “This will help me buy gasoline and food for my family.” The DSWD regional office plans to conduct similar payout activities in other municipalities of Sorsogon province in the coming days, targeting more transport workers affected by soaring fuel prices. “This initiative does not end here; our efforts for the entire transportation sector will continue. In the coming days or weeks, we will begin distributing assistance to other drivers as well,” Teston said. (Monica M. Avila contributed to this report, PIA Bicol/Sorsogon)

Globe reaches 90% AI Adoption Milestone, Accelerates Hands-On Innovation with Google and AWS

Business

Globe has reached a 90 percent adoption rate of Gemini for Workspace as of January 2026, marking a significant milestone in its enterprise-wide AI journey. The achievement reflects strong engagement across teams and business groups, and signals a cultural shift toward practical, everyday AI use, from Gen AI-powered quality assurance bots to personal automation flows and custom productivity apps built to simplify work.   The milestone forms part of Globe’s broader strategy to democratize AI. The approach focuses on enablement, experimentation, and inclusion. Rather than relying solely on top-down mandates, Globe is equipping employees with the tools, infrastructure, and confidence to integrate AI into their daily workflows. Globally, only 55 percent of companies report any level of AI adoption. The company’s adoption rate positions the company well above the benchmark and underscores its commitment to making AI accessible, safe, and usable for citizen developers across the organization. “Reaching 90 percent adoption of Gemini for Workspace shows that our people are not just curious about AI. They are actively using it to improve how they work every day,” said Anton Bonifacio, Chief AI Officer and Chief Information Security Officer at Globe. “Our goal has always been to make AI practical and valuable. We want every team to feel empowered to experiment, build, and turn ideas into real progress.” To sustain this momentum, Globe and Google Cloud conducted an Agentic AI Use Case Discovery Workshop that brought together teams across the organization. The session introduced Gemini Enterprise and its agentic AI capabilities through live demonstrations, breakout sessions, and guided use-case mapping. It also encouraged continued experimentation and daily use of AI, with Globe now working toward an internal agent registry to help scale these solutions across departments. Complementing this, Globe partnered with AWS on a workshop centered on agentic AI-driven development, equipping teams to design AI workflows that can perform tasks on their behalf and accelerate enterprise development. Through an agentic design thinking framework, participants identified friction points in existing processes and mapped generative AI solutions to automate repetitive work, particularly across software development life cycle processes. “These workshops show how we are moving beyond awareness to real capability,” said Jesse Liamzon, Head of the Agentic AI Center for Enablement. “We are giving our teams the space to experiment, the tools to build, and the confidence to apply AI in ways that solve real problems. That is how adoption becomes meaningful and how progress becomes sustainable.” As Globe continues to advance its AI strategy, the company is focused on empowering more teams, building confidence through hands-on experience, and translating curiosity into measurable and scalable impact. With 90 percent adoption and continuing momentum, Globe’s AI journey has moved beyond potential into practical, everyday use that is driving real progress across the organization.

Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio with Sports Turismo Alliance, Inc. President Charles Lim during the Sports Tourism Forum Cebu at NUSTAR Resort Cebu.   Cebu City, Philippines— Industry leaders, and stakeholders gathered at NUSTAR Resort Cebu for the successful staging of the Sports Tourism Forum 2026, marking a significant step in the Philippines’ push to elevate sports tourism as a key pillar of tourism  growth. Bringing together an impressive roster of speakers and panelists from across the sports and tourism landscape, the forum created a strong sense of alignment among participants. A clear direction emerged from the discussions: sports tourism is rapidly evolving into a high-impact sector capable of driving visitor arrivals, investment, and regional development. Throughout the forum, speakers emphasized that global travel patterns are shifting, with more travelers seeking immersive, experience-driven journeys anchored on shared interests such as sports. Charles Lim, President and COO of Sports Turismo Alliance Inc., highlighted this shift, noting the rising appeal of sport-motivated travel and the growing number of travelers planning trips around sporting events and activities in the coming year. The Philippines is positioning itself to take advantage of this momentum. In his keynote message, Patrick Gregorio, Chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission, shared the country’s vision of becoming a leading sports tourism destination in the region. He pointed to the Philippines’ natural advantages, including a strong sports culture, diverse destinations, and the ability to host events year-round, as well as ongoing efforts to better align government initiatives through a unified, inter-agency approach, the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee. Cebu, in particular, was highlighted as an emerging hub for sports tourism, with its combination of natural attractions and event-ready venues making it an ideal host for international competitions. The forum underscored how events can serve as powerful economic drivers, especially when they attract not just participants but also accompanying visitors who contribute to local businesses and extend their stay. As Princess Galura, President and General Manager of Sunrise Events, shared, sporting events bring in fresh economic activity that directly benefits host communities. Other speakers also stressed that the true value of sports tourism lies in transforming events into holistic destination experiences. OIC-Regional Director of DOT-7, Dr. Gelena Asis-Dimpas noted that sporting events go beyond competition and create meaningful visitor experiences. A recurring theme throughout the Forum was the importance of collaboration. Mr Lim emphasized that building a sustainable sports tourism industry requires coordination among government agencies, event organizers, tourism stakeholders, and local communities. He also highlighted the need for continued investment in infrastructure and event capabilities to ensure that destinations can meet the demands of large-scale, world-class sporting events. The Forum attracted participants, not only from across the Philippines, but also from Thailand, United Kingdom, Turkey. Malaysia, Germany and South Korea. It was supported by NUSTAR Resort and Casino Cebu, Department of Tourism Central Visayas, Province of Cebu, Philippine Sports Commission, The Freeman, Islands Souvenirs and professionally managed by Selrahco. for Sports Turismo Alliance, Inc.

2nd Batch ng AboitizPower-JERA nagtapos ng BOMP

Region 4

“Medyo matagal ako nag-work sa office. From 2010 hanggang 2019.   Pero during that time, meron na kasi ‘yung… itong family business namin. Ginagawa tayo nilang role model. Since you are the mother, you are the role model. (JDP/DEG PIA-CAR with SLU intern Nathalia Macadangdang)
