By Dante Salvana Subic Bay Freeport – The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and this premier Freeport is all set as the 2024 Central Luzon Sustainable Tourism Summit (CLSTS) happens on September 11 and 12, 2024 at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center (SBECC). SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño said that the two-day event in collaboration with the Department of Tourism Region 3, and dubbed as “Towards a Carbon Neutral Future: Central Luzon’s Commitment to Sustainable Tourism,” is aimed at raising awareness of the current environment issues. “This year’s event promises to share more insights on how tourists can help Mother Earth through first-hand sustainability efforts that have been conducted inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. The activity is open to all tourism officers and stakeholders from Central Luzon, and is also geared towards the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the tourism sector, who are focused on the preservation of the environment and members of the academe,” he said. For the first day of the Summit, messages from Aliño, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Regional Director Ralph Pablo, Olongapo City Mayor Rolen Paulino Jr., and DOT3 Regional Director Richard G. Daenos, which hope to create awareness about sustainable tourism and love for the environment will be delivered, as well as the keynote speech from DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco. Highlighting the first day will be the SBMA’s launching of the Race to Carbon Neutrality to be led by Chairman Aliño and Ecology Center Chief Amethya Dela Llana-Koval. A discussion on the Strategies for Carbon Neutral Tourism Enterprises will be conducted by Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) Senior Research Fellow John Paolo Rivera. For the afternoon session, a topic on Cultural Preservation as a Pillar of Sustainable Tourism will be led by focal person National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Committee for Monuments and Sites former Vice Chairman Arch. Jayson Portem. Meanwhile, the second day will focus on discussions on the Role of Technology in Achieving Net Zero Carbon in Tourism Destinations, with Net Zero Carbon Alliance (NZCA) Executive Director Allan Barcena as the focal person and on Traveling Sustainably: Tips and Tools for Eco-Friendly Tourism. The succeeding talks revolve on Harnessing the Power of Sports for Environmental Stewardship in Coastal Communities with Alon and Araw Club owner Donn Lawrence Quintos as the focal person, followed by the Sustainable Transportation Solutions for Tourists presentation. The two-day event will include eco-tours of the Subic Bay Freeport Zone and its contingent localities namely, Birdwatching at Nabasan Area; tree planting at the SBMA Ecology Mangrove Nursery; trips to the El Kabayo Waterfalls; Pamulaklakin Aeta Forest Trail; the Green Building of Pacific Ace; Adventure Cove; Alon and Araw Club in Cabangan; Pinatubo Brewery in San Marcelino; and Dela Llana Farm in Castillejos. Aliño highly encourages stakeholders to come and participate in the two-day event as this is the biggest ecotourism summit held in Central Luzon. BAGUIO CITY — As typhoons and different types of crises continue to disproportionately impact the Filipino poor, politicians take every opportunity to project their concern as elections loom. Baguio Tourism Council (BTC) chief Gladys Vergara said that the distribution of financial aid and government-funded packages to the needy should not be used by politicians as a venue to pursue their vested interests. Vergara appealed to government agencies, especially those handling financial aid distribution, not to allow crooked politicians to use their services for political gain. She also stressed the importance of transparency in public service and good governance for the best interests of the people. The Baguio tourism chief also expressed concerns about reports of city officials allegedly hijacking the distribution of financial aid or assistance and projecting such actions as their own projects or programs. She said these practices are part of traditional politics or a form of patronage politics.

Camp BGen Vicente P Lim – Personnel of Biñan Component City Police Station arrested the Rank Number 5 Regional Most Wanted Person charged with multiple crimes of murder, illegal drugs and robbery during a police operation against Most Wanted Persons in Barangay San Antonio, Biñan City, Laguna, on September 6. The arrested fugitive was identified as alias Martin, 32, of Barangay San Antonio Biñan City who was arrested by virtue of Warrants of Arrest for the crime of Murder, issued by the Regional Trial Court, Branch 152, Biñan City, on August 17, 2022, with no bail recommended; 2 counts of robbery, issued by the Regional Trial Court, Branch 24, Biñan City, on September 4, 2023, with a recommended bail of P100,000.00; and Violation of Section 11, Article II of RA 9165 (Illegal Possession of Dangerous Drugs), issued by the Regional Trial Court, Branch 155, Biñan City, on May 17, 2023, with a recommended bail of P200,000.00. The operation was recorded thru Body Worn Camera to ensure the legality of the arrest. Magalong SOCA bares strong measures vs climate change,disasters

Keith BAGUIO CITY — “We must complement our environmental efforts with strong measures to address climate change and disasters effectively.” Thus, stressed Mayor Benjamin Magalong in his State of the City Address 2024 during the 115th Baguio Charter Day Anniversary program, September 1, at the Baguio Convention and Cultural Center. He disclosed that the city was recognized with the Gawad KALASAG Award for 2023, achieving the prestigious ‘Beyond Compliant’ status which reflects the Summer Capital’s “significant progress in disaster risk reduction and management.” In addition to the Flood Early Warning System (FEWS), the Mayor said the city recently implemented a Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) in Dontogan barangay developed by the University of the Cordilleras in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Philippine Council. “LEWS uses sensors to track soil movement, soil moisture, rainfall, and temperature, providing essential data to mitigate landslide risks.,” he explained. The Mayor said the city applied for the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction’s (UNDRR) ‘Making Cities Resilient 2030’ Program in 2021, “however, we are ambitiously aiming to achieve full resilience by 2026.” He revealed that the city is supported by a three-year capacity building program funded by a grant from the National Resilience Council (NRC) and Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies (ARISE), and is implementing key initiatives such as the Green Building Code, Blue Walks to restore natural streams, and Green Walks to turn roads into green streets. “We also conducted a Social Vulnerability Assessment to address vulnerabilities in economics, population, housing, and disaster preparedness,” the Mayor said. He added that the city’s Comprehensive Climate and Disaster Risk Assessment (CDRA) leverages advanced technologies like digital twin mapping within its barangays.
