Cebu Pacific expands plastic bottle recycling program to Cebu

Environment

Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), the Philippines’ leading carrier, has expanded its Onboard Plastic Bottle Segregation Program to include flights operating in and out of Cebu, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to sustainable aviation. In collaboration with the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA), the program aims to collect plastic bottles used during flights and repurpose them into cement and construction materials. This effort not only reduces waste generated from air travel but also supports the airline’s broader environmental conservation goals. “Sustainability is at the core of our operations,” said Xander Lao, CEB president and chief commercial officer. “By converting plastic waste into valuable resources, we are not only minimizing our environmental impact but also setting a positive example for the aviation industry.” The program has already shown progress since its initial launch on flights to and from Manila, where collected bottles have been repurposed for textile production in the Philippines. Building on this success, CEB plans to extend the initiative to other major hubs, including Clark, Davao, and Iloilo. The airline is also seeking additional partnerships with local governments and environmental organizations to enhance its recycling efforts. CEB’s commitment to sustainability reflects a broader vision where environmental stewardship and innovative practices drive progress. By integrating sustainable practices into all aspects of its operations, the airline not only reduces its carbon emissions but also promotes a culture of environmental responsibility, setting a benchmark for the aviation industry.

Cayetano to address modernization concerns as Senate seeks to halt PTMP Implementation

NCR

MANILA — Aiming for a more efficient and inclusive Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP), Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, along with other senators, seeks to temporarily suspend its implementation through a Senate resolution. Filed on July 30, 2024, Senate Resolution No. 1096 underscores the valid and urgent concerns raised by affected drivers, groups, unions, and transport cooperatives, aiming to improve the execution of the PTMP, formerly known as the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP). Under the program, individual operators are required by the government to “consolidate” or join cooperatives and corporations for easier processing of bank loans when they avail themselves of the modernized public utility vehicles. Cayetano and his co-authors acknowledged the plight of drivers who will be left behind, writing in the resolution that the small stakeholders, “particularly the drivers, who remain unconsolidated, are effectively forced out of their livelihoods, with most of them expressing that the only skill they have is driving.” As of April 30, 2024 – the latest deadline set by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for the consolidation of public utility vehicles (PUVs) – 36,217 units, or approximately 19% of the jeepneys and other PUVs, have not yet consolidated. The resolution states that the high figure of unconsolidated units is primarily due to “insufficiency of information drive on the part of the government to educate the drivers, operators, and transport groups about the PTMP and burden of financing the cost of modern PUVs, which greatly exceeds the financial capacity of drivers and operators.” While Cayetano and the co-authoring senators believe the goal of modernization is commendable, they assert that there is an urgent need to thoroughly review and reassess the program’s impact due to these matters. “While the intent of PTMP is laudable, continuing with the Program without threshing out these concerns would go against the Constitutional directive of promoting social justice in all phases of national development,” they stated in the resolution. Cayetano earlier said the PTMP presented a “one-size-fits-all” transport modernization program and had not taken the differences among localities into consideration. “Kung sa gamot walang cure-all, sa programa ng gobyerno lalo in a country with more than 7,000 islands, wala namang one-size-fits-all,” he said. Cayetano also said that drivers, transport groups, and cooperatives would be willing to modernize as long as it does not overly burden them and ensures the sustainability of their livelihoods. “Basta ‘win-win’ ang sitwasyon, most drivers and operators ay papayag sa modernization,” he said.

SBMA, Subic companies augment equipment to control oil spill in Bataan

Region 3

Subic Bay Freeport – The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and the Subic Freeport community have mobilized additional equipment to control the oil spill in Bataan. SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño said that the SBMA has allowed the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to use its 160-meter spill boom last Friday to help contain the oil spill from the MT Terra Nova that sank off the waters of Limay town on Thursday. Aliño said that the SBMA is willing to provide any assistance to the PCG by lending equipment from the agency’s Seaport Department. The SBMA helped the PCG provide the needed equipment at the Subic Bay Yacht Club (SBYC). “We hope that they would also use it not just for the MT Terra Nova incident, but also for the MTKR Jason Bradley that sank on the coastal waters of Mariveles,” he added. The SBMA conducted an emergency meeting thru Senior Deputy Administrator for Operations Ronnie Yambao last week to discuss the deployment of the oil spill boom using the PCG’s BRP Suluan. Meanwhile, two towage companies were also tapped to assist in containing the oil spill from MT Terra Nova using their expertise, equipment, and tugboats. Yambao identified the companies as Harbor Star Shipping Services Inc. and Malayan Towage and Salvage Corp. “The two companies have requested from the Operations Branch of the Seaport Department to exit the Port of Subic to respond to the oil spill in Limay,” he added. Harbor Star Shipping Services Inc. mobilized siphoning equipment to extract at least 300,000 liters of industrial fuel oil (IFO). At least 50,000 liters of IFO are targeted to be siphoned per day. Recently, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) held a joint meeting with the national and regional disaster risk reduction committee to address the Bataan oil spill incident. DILG Sec. Atty. Benjamin C. Abalos Jr. led the meeting along with the National at Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils. Bataan Gov. Joet Garcia, Pampanga Gov. Dennis Pineda, and other government agencies were also present to discuss possible actions to avert massive oil spill in the region.

1.31 million tourist visited Baguio in 2023

Baguio City

BAGUIO CITY – The City Tourism Office recorded 1.31 million tourist arrivals in 2023, which proves that the so-called Summer Capital remains a hit with vacationers and continues to be in the Top 5 tourist destinations since the pandemic. According to City Tourism Operations Officer Aloysius Mapalo, the highest tourist arrival in the city was in 2018 with a total of 1,760,729. In 2022, 1,042,309 tourist arrivals were recorded; 247,480 in 2021; 1,536,458 in 2019; 1,521,748 in 2017; and 1,294,906 in 2016. Mapalo clarified that these numbers only cover the data of overnight tourists reported to the city government by accredited accommodation establishments (AEs) in compliance with Ordinance No. 120-2017 or the Tourism Statistics Standards of Baguio City and excludes tourists not reported by AEs and day tourists who did not stay overnight. He said the average annual arrival number could have tripled or to 3-4 million extrapolated estimates of annual total arrivals over the past five years if the numbers of overnight stays and those not recorded because they are not officially recorded” to consider. “This means we have 20,000 to 30,000 average weekly arrivals, more than 70 percent of which occur on weekends. It can double up to 60,000 during peak season weekends usually during the summer and Christmas seasons or on long weekends,” Mapalo said. He said, in the total of 2023, less than 1 percent or 0.64 percent are foreigners and 99.36 percent are domestic tourists. “We are not really able to attract many foreign tourists. Mostly they are targeting other Cordilleran destinations and they just pass by our city,” he said. Regarding its economic impact, Mapalo said that tourism has a 20 percent average contribution to the city’s gross domestic product (GDP). He said based on the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) report, a tourist spends an average of P2,000-P4,000 per day while the average length of stay is 1.4 days. This translates to an estimate of up to P15 billion in annual gross receipts.
