Globe maintains ‘AA’ MSCI ESG Rating for 2nd consecutive year, leadership in sustainability practice

Environment

Globe has maintained its MSCI ESG Rating of “AA” for the second consecutive year, solidifying its position as an Environment, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) leader in the telecom industry. MSCI ESG Research provides MSCI ESG Ratings on global public and a few private companies on a scale of AAA (leader) to CCC (laggard), according to exposure to industry-specific ESG risks and the ability to manage those risks relative to peers. MSCI assesses governance structures, policies, targets, performance metrics, and any related controversies of companies. Globe’s consistent “AA” rating demonstrates its proactive approach to managing risks and its dedication to sustainable business practices. Globe remains committed to decarbonization. As the first Philippine company with science-based net zero targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Globe has made significant strides in minimizing its carbon footprint. In 2023, the company achieved an 18% reduction in emissions through various green initiatives, including energy management programs, increased use of renewable energy, and strategic operational changes. To ensure fair representation of Globe’s GHG emissions, Globe’s data in 2023 underwent third party verification. Building digital trust also remains a top thrust for Globe. It has implemented robust cybersecurity measures, including Risk Based Vulnerability Management (RBVM) and regular audits.  Globe’s significant investment in cybersecurity, totaling approximately US$101.2 million since 2015, underscores its focus on protecting customer data and ensuring the integrity of its digital infrastructure. On the other hand, Globe’s care for its employees is evident in its comprehensive benefits package which exceeds mandatory government requirements. The mobile leader offers innovative programs such as the myChoice FlexBen Program, allowing employees to customize their benefits, and the Longevity Award Program, which recognizes tenured employees with company shares. Globe’s recent G-Evolution Program further proves its commitment to sustainability by incentivizing employees to adopt electric vehicles. The company was recently hailed for the fourth consecutive year for HR Asia Best Companies to Work For in Asia, The Philippines Chapter (2024). Pursuant to Globe’s Board Risk Oversight and Sustainability Committee (BROSC) charter, the BROSC’s role is to oversee Globe’s sustainability policies, strategies, and programs and ensure appropriateness in addressing sustainability-related risks and opportunities and effectiveness and alignment in addressing expectations of the stakeholders (A copy of the charter is available at the Globe’s Corporate Governance webpage). Moreover, Globe has implemented ESG-linked incentives for executives and employees, fostering a culture of responsibility and excellence throughout the organization. “Our ESG rating reflects the collective effort of our entire organization in integrating sustainability principles in the way we do business. We remain dedicated to driving positive change, not only within our company but also in the communities we serve and the nation at large,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer. “We are committed to upholding the highest standards of governance, which is integral to our overall ESG strategy. Our consistent ‘AA’ rating is a testament to Globe’s rigorous approach to compliance and governance. This recognition not only reflects our dedication to ethical business practices but also underscores our role as a responsible corporate citizen,” said Marisalve Ciocson-Co, Globe’s Chief Compliance Officer. In the face of long-term ESG-linked risks, Globe consistently demonstrates its resilience, innovating and adapting to the evolving landscape of digital solutions. Its commitment to sustainable business practices sets a benchmark for the industry and creates long-term value for all stakeholders. Philippine Fleet’s Unilateral Exercise Kicks Off

Region 3

By Dante Salvana   Subic, Zambales – The second iteration of PF’s Unilateral Exercise started in an opening ceremony held in Subic, Zambales graced by the Acting commander, Offshore Combat Force, Capt Joselito de Guzman PN (MNSA) at Naval Operating Base-Subic, on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. The exercise aims to test and enhance the interoperability between Offshore Combat Force’s capital ships like BRP JOSE RIZAL, BRP ANTONIO LUNA, and Fleets’s air assets such as AW159 Helicopter and Beechcraft TC-90. Unlike the previous exercise, this year’s focus is on in-depth naval warfare operations. The training activity is divided into two phases, the Harbor Phase and the Sea Phase. The Harbor Phase focused on planning, training discussions, and Subject Matter Experts (SME) lectures.   The Sea Phase, on the other hand, is packed with numerous serials that are designed to simulate various scenarios that demand quick thinking, precision, and cooperation among all units involved. These will test not only technical skills and knowledge in the new capabilities and multi-dimensional warfare but also the unit’s teamwork, discipline, and leadership. Capt De Guzman lauded in his remarks, “This unilateral exercise will test and validate existing warfare doctrines, test new capabilities in multi-dimensional warfare for us to develop common TTPs to address existing gaps, and enhance the interoperability and battle readiness of OCF vessels, specifically the Jose Rizal Class Frigates and Del Pilar Class Patrol Vessels”. Likewise, the at-sea exercise will also test integration between JRCFs and Naval Air Wing’s AW159 for Anti-Submarine Warfare, along with conducting systems checks after its (FF151) Drydocking Repairs in Ulsan, South Korea last July 2024. The commitment and dedication of every sailor to contribute to the Navy’s modernization efforts are vividly demonstrated through initiatives of OCF. This foundation plays a pivotal role in nurturing a mindset that is aligned with the Navy’s vision for the future. By providing the necessary training, support, and resources, OCF empowers sailors to excel in their roles and adapt to the changing demands of a modern Navy.

SM PRIME’s sustainable developments: Bridging lifestyle and leisure with sustainability

NCR

The mall culture in the Philippines is more than just about shopping, dining, and entertainment. The eco-conscious age pivots its focus toward sustainability and mindful urban development – a story exemplified by the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Complex of SM Prime, one of Southeast Asia’s leading integrated property developers. Spanning 67 hectares, SM MOA Complex is currently the largest shopping mall nationwide and sixth worldwide. It’s a vibrant integrated city development where lifestyle and leisure intersect with sustainability. Behind the bustling retail haven, gastronomic delights, and entertainment attractions lies a dedication to environmental stewardship and community resilience that set a precedent for malls in the country on sustainable urban planning. 𝗣𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 SM Prime, through its subsidiary SM Supermalls, has undertaken groundbreaking initiatives in SM MOA complex and its other SM malls across the country to reduce the ecological footprint and promote a greener future. From pioneering activities and integrating advanced technologies such as solar rooftops, water recycling systems, adoption of air conditioning inverters, and installation of standard LED-lighting and motion detectors on its escalators to robust solid waste management, advanced water conservation practices, and green building developments, SM Prime is regarded as the most energy efficient mall group in the country.  Currently, the company sources more than 50% of its electricity from renewable energy across all its properties and facilities nationwide. Apart from renewable power generation, SM Supermalls is also part of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Interruptible Load Program (ILP), a power supply mitigation program wherein companies with their own stand-by generation capacities can be compensated by the government by using their own generation facilities when power reserves are low. To date, SM can reduce around 110 megawatts (MW) of power from the grid when 56 of its malls will use their own generator sets. SM has the largest offset with the SM Mall of Asia providing a committed capacity of 15.92MW. SM Prime further intensified its sustainability journey and recently embarked on an #SMWasteFreeFuture program, encouraging its stakeholders and employees across the group to reduce waste generation through effective segregation practices and adopt sustainable consumption by recycling, reusing, or composting. Caption: Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong (right) samples the water from SM Baguio’s rainwater treatment facility with SM VP for Corporate Compliance Engr. Liza Silerio (left). Sustainable water usage is one of the long-standing practices of SM Prime. The group has been recycling water since the 1990s, treating an average of 1 billion gallons annually in past years to repurpose for mall operations including toilet cleaning and landscaping use. It has integrated rainwater harvesting systems in over 30 malls, particularly in flood-prone areas. Recently, it made another breakthrough in water usage by successfully treating rainwater into potable water in SM City Baguio, which the company aims to replicate in other malls. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 Apart from its environmental approaches and innovations, SM Prime takes sustainable mall design and developments seriously across its projects. Led by SM Prime’s subsidiary, SM Engineering, Design and Development Corporation (SMEDD), the company has revolutionized its design approaches to green building – minimizing vulnerability and increasing the infrastructure resiliency of its developments. Among its developments are LEED-Gold certified SM Aura and green office buildings in SM MOA Complex that deliver healthier work-life spaces to optimize business operations while minimizing its environmental impact. Caption: LEED-Gold certified SM Aura is SM Prime’s gold standard in building sustainable projects. At the core of SM MOA Complex’s continued expansion is the community’s safety and well-being through disaster resiliency features. SM Prime worked with a team of local and international experts, including Jan de Nul, Belgium’s renowned coastal development construction company, to ensure the stability of the terrain and infrastructures against earthquakes and erosion. The complex’s climate adaptation features include a seawall design to protect the development and surrounding communities from potential storm surges or rising sea levels, as well as specialized foundation systems against liquefaction and seismic events. This commitment establishes a benchmark within the SM Prime portfolio, demonstrating best practices used across other SM malls nationwide. 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 As the world navigates environmental and urbanization challenges, SM Prime continues to advance sustainability, innovation, community stewardship, and resiliency. With its multifaceted approaches and pioneering efforts in the SM MOA Complex and across all its developments, SM Prime is a key Philippine industry partner through its revolutionary and responsible mixed-use developments with premier destinations integrating leisure, lifestyle, and business with sustainability and disaster resilience at work. SM Prime remains committed to its role as a catalyst for economic growth, delivering innovative and sustainable lifestyle cities, thereby enriching the quality of life of millions of people. SM Prime is pursuing the next horizon on integrated property development and onward to building sustainable cities of the future.
