Globe reports bank-related spam, scam SMS steadily declining

NCR

Globe has noted a substantial decrease in bank-related spam and scam SMS, highlighting the success of its rigorous anti-fraud measures and strategic collaborations with major financial institutions. From January to June 2024, Globe successfully intercepted 2,740,012 bank-related spam and scam messages, marking a 43.56% year-on-year decline compared to the 4,855,199 messages blocked in the same period of 2023. This underscores the effectiveness of Globe’s proactive strategies and robust partnerships with the country’s major banks and financial institutions. The noteworthy improvement follows Globe’s anti-fraud agreements with the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP), encompassing 45 major banks, and various individual players in the finance sector. These collaborations have enabled vigorous and timely data and intelligence-sharing, aligning efforts to prevent and investigate fraud more effectively. “Our collective efforts with the banking sector have significantly strengthened our fight against spam and scam SMS targeting depositors. By working together and sharing critical intelligence, combined with our enhanced detection and blocking systems, we can now better protect our customers from illegal activities,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief Information Security Officer and Chief AI Officer. Globe has allocated approximately US$20 million to enhance its spam and scam SMS detection and blocking systems to prevent fraudulent messages from reaching consumers, The company operates a 25/7 Security Operations Center that filters out unwanted messages, including app-to-person and person-to-person SMS from international and domestic sources. Amid this decline, Globe calls on mobile users to remain vigilant amid emerging scam schemes that evade cellular networks, including the use of chat apps and fake cell towers that are able to send messages without telco detection.

URC breaks into meal preparation market with new breading mix

Business

Universal Robina Corp. (URC) is making its first foray into the meals preparation mega-category with a new breading mix that offers a better – and very appealing – alternative to brands currently available on grocery shelves. “VegiGood!  is a smarter way to get kids to eat vegetables”, said Mian D. David, URC’s Chief Marketing Officer. VegiGood!, which is available in leading supermarkets, groceries, market stalls and sari-sari stores, has been formulated in a way that it is as appetizing as its main competitors, but with a twist: It actually contains carrots and malunggay, real vegetables. “It is still an all-in-one, crunchy-style breading mix that has a blend of tasty seasonings and spices.  But it’s also something meant to help mothers give their kids a better diet,” said David. “The taste and crunch are still there, so it won’t dampen the children’s enthusiasm and appetite,” said David. Tests have shown that consumers like VegiGood! because of taste combined with its crispy and crunchy texture. The market for cooking aids and culinary aids – meal mixes and sauces – grew 12 percent in 2022 and 19 percent in the first quarter of 2023.  It accounts for 7.8 percent of the food market. “URC aims to grow the business by entering the meal occasions market, delighting consumers with tasty, quality, innovative mealtime solutions, relevant to Filipino families,” said David. URC has been producing iconic food and beverage brands such as Great Taste, C2 Cool & Clean, Piattos, Maxx candy and Cream-O cookies, which have been part of Filipinos’ lives for almost 70 years. One of the country’s largest food and beverage manufacturers, URC also has a significant, and growing, presence in ASEAN. Its leading regional brands include Lexus, Tivoli and Fun-O.

San Isidro MPS probe confirms shabu seized in Northern Samar worth P50-M

Vis-Min

CAMP KANGLEON, Palo, Leyte, – In a significant development, the San Isidro Municipal Police Station conducted an intensive investigation confirming the recovery of shabu from an abandoned hut in Barangay San Roque, San Isidro, Northern Samar. As background, two farmers handed over two plastic bags of suspected shabu to the San Isidro MPS, leading to the discovery of a substantial quantity of suspected drugs in the abandoned hut on July 14, 2024. According to the Chemistry Report released by the Samar Forensic Unit on July 16, 2024, the recovered substance tested positive as methamphetamine hydrochloride, locally known as shabu, weighing 8.138 kilograms with a value of P50,080,000.00. Further investigation revealed that the abandoned hut belongs to a certain “Jaime” and his family, who relocated to the mountainous part of the barangay. It was also discovered that the son of the hut’s owner, a 17-year-old student, and his friend had found a box containing the substance near the national road in April 2024. They mistook it for potassium alum or “tawas” and stored it in their former residence, now the abandoned hut. The substances remained hidden in a sack of charcoal even after the family moved to a new house. Upon inspection, it was found that some bags had been exposed to elements due to the hut’s dilapidated condition. Lt. Millen Charles Vincent Reyes, chief of police, recommends extending the investigation to further shed light on the case. He stated, “Given the magnitude of this drug haul and its implications, an extended investigation will provide clarity on the network behind this operation and prevent such incidents in the future.” San Isidro MPS also urges a coordinated effort involving the Northern Samar Police Provincial Office (NSPPO), other governmental agencies, and stakeholders to assist in identifying and apprehending those responsible for the abandoned shabu. “The San Isidro MPS, together with the local government, remains committed to eradicating the presence of dangerous drugs in the community. Our collective efforts will significantly contribute to dismantling illegal drug networks, ensuring the safety and welfare of our community,” he emphasized.
