Globe Powers over 600 towns with Fiber, urges public to help prevent cable cuts

NCR

Globe has successfully migrated more than 600 towns nationwide to full fiber connectivity, as part of its ongoing efforts to improve customer experience by providing Filipinos with faster, more reliable internet. These areas are now completely copper-free, enabling residents to enjoy high-speed broadband built for today’s digital lifestyle — whether for remote work, online learning, small businesses, or government services. This transition is not only a network achievement but also a win for sustainability. By eliminating copper from its network, Globe is reducing its environmental impact, supporting its greater sustainability agenda as part of its green network strategy, and discouraging illegal salvaging that has historically disrupted connectivity. “We’ve built the infrastructure, now we need to protect it,” said Joel Agustin, Globe Head of Service Planning and Engineering. “Fiber has no copper, no resale value, and cutting it only harms the communities that rely on it. That’s why we’re asking residents to help us safeguard these lines. Connectivity is no longer a luxury, it’s a lifeline.” No financial gain Despite the shift to fiber, incidents of intentional cable cuts continue to be reported, often due to misinformation or the mistaken belief that fiber can be sold like copper. Of the initial 425 towns that transitioned early to fiber, 170 or 40% experienced intentional cuts historically. Even in areas where copper theft was common, 63% still saw fiber-related incidents, highlighting the need for greater public awareness. Globe stresses that cutting fiber lines brings no financial gain, but can cause widespread harm. A single cable cut can disconnect entire communities, affecting homes, schools, businesses, and government offices for hours or even days. Protect connectivity To help protect connectivity, Globe urges residents to: Report any suspicious activity near fiber lines or utility poles to the nearest barangay or police station; Support barangay patrols and community watch programs; Work with local officials to include infrastructure protection in ordinances and local plans These efforts support Globe’s collaboration with local government units and national agencies, focused on education, prevention, and rapid response. As Globe brings pure fiber connectivity to more towns across the country, it calls on Filipinos to play an active role in protecting the infrastructure that powers digital life — while also supporting a more sustainable future. Residents can now experience reliable, high-speed fiber internet by signing up through the following links: For Globe GFiber Postpaid: https://new.globe.com.ph/gfiber For Globe GFiber Prepaid: https://gfiberprepaid.globe.com.ph

SM Book Nook Honors Dr. Jose Rizal and Inspires Our Youth

Lifestyle

National Historical Commission of the Philippines and Book Nook proudly unveils Ang Batang Babaeng Nagtitinda ng Posporo—Dr. Jose Rizal’s Tagalog translation of a classic children’s story, bridging generations through literature.     Book Nook at SM Podium welcomed a historic celebration on June 19, 2025, the 164th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal, as the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) launched Ang Batang Babaeng Nagtitinda ng Posporo—a children’s book translated into Tagalog by none other than Dr. Rizal himself. Dr. Rizal translated Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl into Tagalog in 1886 as a heartfelt gift to his nieces and nephews. The translation, originally titled Ang Batang Babaing Mai Dalang Sakafuego, is part of a series of fairytales Rizal worked on during his time in Germany. Among them were Ang Punong Pino (The Fir Tree), Ang Gahinlalaki (Thumbelina), Ang Pangit na Sisiu ng Pato (The Ugly Duckling), and Ang Sugu o Sugo (The Angel). Held at Book Nook’s space inside SM Podium, the engaging event also featured a special storytelling session by the Kuwentistas of the National Library of the Philippines, bringing Rizal’s words to life for the next generation. “We are honored that Book Nook was chosen as the launch venue for this meaningful release. Book Nook was created to be more than just a reading space—it is a home for stories that shape who we are,” said Mr. Joaquin L. San Agustin, Executive Vice President for Marketing of SM Supermalls. “This launch is yet another important milestone and part of our ongoing commitment to heritage learning, accessible education, and community storytelling.” More than just a library, Book Nook is a literacy and community engagement initiative under SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls. It is a space designed to inspire curiosity, celebrate local and global narratives, and make storytelling accessible to all. With a dedicated NHCP Corner, Book Nook proudly supports history and heritage appreciation—bridging generations through books, culture, and meaningful partnerships. This collaboration between NHCP and Book Nook reinforces their shared mission: to make Philippine history more accessible, engaging, and alive in the daily lives of Filipinos—especially the youth who Rizal once called “the hope of the motherland.” If you or your organization would like to collaborate with Book Nook for storytelling sessions, workshops, or community events, we’d love to hear from you. [This is a fulfillment of my promise when I serve my first term as Governor, a fulfillment of the dreams of the first batch of over 700 students and the hundreds more who want to become knowledgeable and good.] Education is one of the governor’s flagship programs to improve the lives of his constituents by opening the PPC. Magalong wants increase penalty vs. irresponsible pet owners

Baguio City

By Aileen P. Refuerzo   BAGUIO CITY — Mayor Benjamin Magalong will ask the city council to pass an ordinance increasing the penalty for irresponsible pet owners particularly those allowing their pets to discharge their waste in public areas. The mayor said it is high time to put more teeth to the measure to abate violations. “People should stop doing this. It is unsanitary and repulsive,” the mayor said. The mayor reminded that irresponsible dog owners are liable under City Ordinance No. 19 Series of 2021 or the Responsible Dog Ownership Ordinance of Baguio City. He called out careless dog owners who release their pets to defecate on roads, neighbor’s properties, parks and other public places. The mayor ordered the City Veterinary and Agriculture Office (CVAO) to intensify the campaign against stray dogs. Ordinance No. 19-2021 penalizes dog owners who fail to properly perform their duties as dog owners causing discomfort to other people. The dog owners’ responsibilities as enumerated in the ordinance are: *They should only acquire and maintain dogs if they are capable and have the means to provide care *Submit the dogs for mandatory registration and regular vaccination and maintaining updated records *Provide their dogs with proper grooming, adequate food and clean shelter and maintain human-animal relationship and provide good health management program for their dogs. *Maintain control over their dogs with the use of a leash when in public places and collect and dispose of their pets’ feces at all times. *Take all measures to prevent their dogs from being stray or nuisance and report immediately any dog-biting incident and take appropriate precaution, and assist dog bite victims and shoulder all expenses incurred relative to the victim’s injuries. Fines for owners who refuse to put their pets on leash start at P500. The ordinance also mandates the registration of their pets with the CVAO or the barangay along with their mandatory vaccination.
