91 SBF utility workers get grocery packs

Region 3

Subic Bay Freeport – Recognizing their contribution to the waste segregation efforts of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), 91 utility workers received proceeds from the 14th Recyclables Collection Event (RCE). During the opening program of the SBMA’s week-long celebration of Zero Waste Month at the Harbor Point Ayala Mall on Monday, these utility workers were given grocery packs as a simple token worth a total of P56,987 from the recyclable materials turned over by Freeport stakeholders. SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño said that the recyclable materials were collected from the recyclables generated from Subic Bay Freeport companies, SBMA departments and residents of the Freeport. He added that the SBMA Ecology Center spearheaded the event, kicking off the month of January as Zero Waste Month Celebration in the SBFZ program that commenced on January 13 and will run until January 17. “This is a part of our Race to Carbon Neutrality Program and a continuing action for the Agency’s ISO 14001:2015 Recertification,” Aliño added. Ecology Center Manager and OIC Senior Deputy Administrator for Regulatory Amethya Dela Llana said that the 91 beneficiaries were from Omniworx, the cleaning services provider tasked with cleaning and maintaining SBMA buildings throughout Subic Bay Freeport. “Why Omniworx? Because they are our waste heroes. Omniworx is our partner in the segregation of wastes at source. They ensure that recyclables are segregated properly, which allowed for the efficient delivery of segregated wastes during the bi-annual RCE for proper disposal through our recyclers,” Dela Llana explained. SBMA Chief of Staff Atty. Von Rodriguez, representing Chairman Aliño, along with Dela Llana and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Provincial Director Enrique Tacbad, were present during the turnover ceremony of the tokens for the 91 Omniworx employees. Tacbad said that materials such as foil from 3-in-1 coffee sachets or juices in tetra packs are being repurposed to make items such as handbags, wallets, and other fashionable knickknacks that can be sold to consumers. He added that one example is the Micro Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) business that the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) is currently conducting with the help of the inmates, citing that these fashionable items were made by them using recycled materials. Proclamation No. 760 series of 2014 declared the month of January as Zero Waste Month celebration. This year’s celebration, themed “Food Waste No More and Break Free from Plastics,” aims to usher consumers to consider changing their lifestyles and practices, and emulate sustainable natural cycles where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use.

NV weighs legal action against DENR over boundary dispute

Region 2

By Rachel Magday Nueva Vizcaya Governor Atty. Jose V. Gambito has directed the Provincial Legal Office to explore potential legal actions against responsible officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). This decision follows the establishment of a Technical Working Group by the DENR, which was assigned to conduct a technical evaluation of the territorial boundaries between the municipalities of Sta. Fe in Nueva Vizcaya and San Nicolas in Pangasinan. Governor Gambito made this directive during a meeting of the ad hoc committee of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, where representatives from the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) presented the TWG’s report. During the meeting, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan also passed a resolution formally objecting to the TWG’s recommendation to set aside the NAMRIA survey results. The governor expressed his gratitude to NAMRIA for standing firm on the validity of the NAMRIA survey, which delineated the correct boundaries between Sta. Fe and San Nicolas. He has voiced strong objections to what he perceives as unwarranted interference by the DENR in the boundary issue concerning Barangay Malico, which he asserts was conclusively resolved through a Memorandum of Agreement signed by elected officials from both provinces. He described the DENR officials’ actions as potential malfeasance, arguing that they are improperly intervening in a matter that has already been settled. Governor Gambito emphasized that the boundary dispute over Barangay Malico has been thoroughly resolved. He affirmed that Barangay Malico is officially part of Nueva Vizcaya, based on a delineation by the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) of the DENR. However, the Technical Working Group’s final report contradicted the NAMRIA survey results, recommending that these be set aside in favor of the approved cadastral maps of both municipalities. “There is no longer any boundary dispute to discuss,” declared Governor Gambito. “The NAMRIA delineation has settled the issue, and it was based on a memorandum of agreement that both parties fully perfected and signed.” Governor Gambito defended the legitimacy of the agreement, asserting that the process was transparent and lawful. “The contract has been consummated, as the completed NAMRIA survey has already delineated the boundaries. There is nothing left to do but respect the results of this agreement. Everything is now a fait accompli.” Governor Gambito’s directive to explore legal avenues underscores his administration’s commitment to safeguarding Nueva Vizcaya’s territorial integrity and ensuring adherence to previously established agreements.

A brighter 2025 for Filipinos: SM Prime evolves with renewable energy

Environment

Imagine a world powered by the sun, the ultimate source of life. As climate change worsens due to fossil fuel use, sustainable energy alternatives are more crucial than ever. The Philippines, with its abundant sunlight, is uniquely positioned to harness solar power and help combat climate change. In 2024, Manila experienced around 4,440 hours of daylight, which translates to a significant potential for solar energy production. SM Prime recognized this potential early on. In 2014, SM North EDSA became the first commercial property in the Philippines to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on its roof, achieving the largest installation in Southeast Asia at the time. This move signaled the beginning of SM Prime’s commitment to renewable energy and energy efficiency. SM Supermalls President Steven Tan explains, “SM’s environmental sustainability began with energy and water conservation. Revolutionizing our malls’ energy efficiency through renewable sources magnifies our responsibility to serving people and the planet.” Today, SM Supermalls operates 44 malls with solar PV systems, generating a combined peak energy of 51.6 megawatts (MW). The largest installation is at SM City Santa Rosa. With a total of 96,000 solar panels across malls in Luzon and Visayas, SM Prime holds the Philippines’ largest solar energy portfolio, covering around 33 hectares. These efforts are a vital part of the company’s Net Zero by 2040 strategy, aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. This 51.6 MW capacity significantly cuts carbon emissions, providing clean energy that powers thousands of homes or removes thousands of cars from the roads. It also reduces the need for coal, offering environmental benefits for both the planet and local communities. The solar power generated directly fuels essential mall operations like lighting and escalators, reducing SM Supermalls' reliance on the national grid. This, in turn, helps stabilize the power supply, reducing the risk of outages and easing the burden on electricity providers. By tapping into clean, renewable energy, SM Prime is contributing to a more sustainable future for the Philippines. SM Prime’s sustainability efforts extend beyond solar energy. The company also focuses on waste management, water conservation, and air quality initiatives, all designed to minimize environmental impact. Through these comprehensive measures, SM Prime strives to create a positive change while ensuring responsible, innovative operations. In sum, SM Prime’s large-scale adoption of solar PV systems, combined with its broader environmental initiatives, exemplifies its dedication to creating a sustainable future for the Philippines. By leading in renewable energy and sustainability, SM Prime is helping pave the way for a cleaner, greener, and brighter tomorrow.

SEC cancels corporate registration of F2M Agri-Farm OPC

NCR

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has revoked the corporate registration of Farm to Market (F2M) Agri-Farm OPC for soliciting investments from the public without the necessary license from the Commission. In an order dated October 9, 2024, the SEC Enforcement and Investor Protection Department (EIPD) revoked F2M Agri-Farm OPC’s certificate of incorporation for violating Section 44 of Republic Act (RA) No. 11232, or the Revised Corporation Code (RCC), Sections 8.1, 26.1 and 28.1 of RA No. 8799, or the Securities Regulation Code (SRC), and Section 11 of RA No. 11765, or the Financial Products and Service Consumer Protection Act. The RCC prohibits corporations from possessing or exercising powers beyond those conferred by law and provided under the articles of incorporation. The SRC, on the other hand, prohibits the selling or offering of securities without a registration statement duly filed with and approved by the Commission, and requires people engaged in the business of buying and selling securities to be registered with the SEC. Accordingly, F2M Agri-Farm OPC was ordered to pay an administrative fine of P1 million, while its incorporator and nominee were directed to pay the same amount. The EIPD found F2M Agri-Farm OPC and its related entities, namely F2M Tarlac City-Main Branch, F2M, F2M Paalaga System, Hog Raising Business, F2M Tuguegarao Branch, F2M Dagupan, F2M La Union Branch, F2M Lagawe, Ifugao, F2M-Solano Nueva Viz. Branch and F2M Tayug, to be offering investments in the nature of an investment contract without the necessary registration and approval from the SEC through the F2M 3 Months Paalaga System. Under the Paalaga System, F2M and its related entities enticed the public to buy one piglet for P5,000 with a promised return of P7,600 after three months, representing a 30% return on investment less 5% service charge, as advertised on their social media page. If an investor buys 20 piglets for P100,000, the investor is expected to receive P152,000 return after three months. The related entities of F2M Agri-Farm OPC are not registered as corporations or partnerships with the SEC and do not have the secondary license to solicit investments or offer securities. The company’s illegal solicitation of investments also constitutes fraud due to its similarity to a Ponzi scheme, where profits or payouts are taken from incoming investors or additional pay-ins of existing member-investors as it does not have any underlying legitimate business to source the returns. As early as April 16, 2024, the SEC has already issued an advisory against the company and its related entities. The Commission subsequently issued a cease and desist order against F2M Agri-Farm OPC on August 20, 2024 to stop the company and its related entities from soliciting investments.

Enabling them to maximize these network enhancements, PLDT and Smart also continue to deploy FarmTech packages across the country to augment the digitalization efforts of local farmers. Tambis St. Bernard Farmers Irrigators Association is the first farmer-group from Southern Leyte to receive this training kit. The FarmTech package is a tech-driven training kit designed to assist farming communities in remote areas in implementing digital literacy programs for their farmer-members. The package contains a tablet, 10 smartphones, a SmartBro pocket WiFi with Smart Prepaid load cards, an outdoor projector, a portable sound system, and learning resources. “We sincerely thank PLDT, Smart, and the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute Region 8 for choosing our association to be one of the beneficiaries of this package. With these tools and the enhanced connectivity in our area, we are more motivated to train our farmer-members on how to utilize mobile devices and applications to improve our farming practices,” said Balasico. Smart’s continued investments in its network infrastructure and innovative products and services to help boost the livelihood of Filipino farmers and fisherfolk are aligned with the PLDT Group’s commitment to help the country achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), particularly UNSDG No. 1 on No Poverty, UNSDG No. 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, and UNSDG No. 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
