Globe and Nokia pioneer ultra-fast 5G mmWave technology in PH, reaching speeds up to 4.3 Gbps

Business

Globe has successfully demonstrated how 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) technology can deliver fiber-like internet performance, without the need for physical cables, using Nokia’s Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) solution combined with Wi-Fi 7. This breakthrough marks a major step forward in next-generation connectivity, with speeds reaching up to 4.3 Gbps, fast enough to power critical operations, boost enterprise productivity, and elevate broadband experiences for Filipinos. In partnership with Nokia, Globe is pioneering the commercial rollout of 5G mmWave in the Philippines. Field tests in Zamboanga City showed the technology’s strong performance even across difficult terrains. At the Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 headquarters in Naval Station Rio Hondo, Globe achieved 4.3 Gbps at a 2.1-kilometer distance, while another test nearly 9 kilometers away still hit speeds close to 1 Gbps. The Philippine Marines are the first to use the technology, relying on Globe’s 5G mmWave to strengthen communications for national security and public service. “We are grateful to Globe, our long-time partner, for continuously supporting the Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 with reliable communications solutions. Through Globe’s commitment to innovation, we have strengthened our connectivity even in the most challenging environments,” said Lt. Col. Nepthalie C. Papa, Commanding Officer of Marine Battalion Landing Team-1, Philippine Marines. “At Globe, we’re always looking ahead, pushing the limits of what’s possible in connectivity,” said Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations. “The success of our 5G mmWave and Wi-Fi 7 deployment with the Philippine Marines proves that advanced connectivity can transform mission-critical operations. Beyond defense, this technology lays the groundwork for a truly digital and connected Philippines.” Globe’s 5G mmWave sites are now live in Zamboanga City, Quezon City, and Rizal province, with plans for wider rollout as compatible devices become more available. The technology opens new opportunities for enterprises, government, and communities—from high-speed broadband for urban and rural areas to private 5G networks that can support industrial automation and secure business operations.

For the third quarter of 2025, total revenue reached ₱24.3 billion, 5% higher year-on-year, despite the seasonal slowdown due to the earlier start of the academic year. The airline flew over 6 million passengers for the quarter, a 1% increase year-on-year. EBITDA grew 11% year-on-year to ₱4.8 billion, while net income amounted to ₱499 million, reversing a ₱173 million net loss in the same period last year. CEB’s growth and margin expansion were supported by an 18% increase in available seat kilometers on an 11% increase in flights year-to-date, as Cebu Pacific continued its transition to larger, higher-capacity, and more fuel-efficient NEO aircraft. By the end of September, the airline was operating over 3,100 weekly flights across 124 routes. “Cebu Pacific delivered a strong year-to-date performance despite seasonal headwinds in the third quarter. This reflects the resilience of our business model, the strength of underlying travel demand, and the discipline of our teams in managing cost and capacity amid an evolving operating environment,” said Michael Szucs, Chief Executive Officer of Cebu Pacific. “We remain committed to making air travel affordable and sustainable for everyone, while ensuring efficiency and reliability as we aim for an even stronger finish to 2025.”

SMC waives tolls for gov’t vehicles in Typhoon Uwan response

Business

San Miguel Corporation (SMC), through its infrastructure arm, has implemented toll-free access for marked government vehicles mobilized for relief and recovery operations in areas affected by Typhoon Uwan, in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure the unimpeded movement of government responders across Luzon. SMC Chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang said the company’s toll operations teams are coordinating closely with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) to facilitate the implementation of the President’s order. “Our priority is to make sure responders get to affected communities as quickly as possible,” Ang said. “We have always worked with government in times of calamity. It’s part of our responsibility to help and to make sure aid reaches those who need it,” he added. SMC said tollway personnel have been deployed across its expressways to assist emergency convoys and ensure their safe and unimpeded passage. SMC Infrastructure operates more than 200 kilometers of expressways in Luzon, including the Skyway System, South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), STAR Tollway, Tarlac–Pangasinan–La Union Expressway (TPLEX), and NAIA Expressway. Ahead of Typhoon Uwan’s landfall, the company deployed maintenance crews to inspect and clear drainage systems, secure roadside signages and billboards, and preposition quick-response teams and heavy equipment in flood-prone areas to keep expressways passable. Motorists are advised to observe traffic rules and speed limits at all times, and to exercise extra caution when driving in inclement weather. For more than a year during the pandemic, SMC waived over P230 million in toll fees for medical frontliners across all its expressways.

Globe reports 18% drop in Fiber Cuts in 1H 2025 aided by stronger LGU and Community Partnerships, Underground Fiber

Business

Globe has recorded an 18% decline in total fiber cut incidents in the first half of 2025 versus the same period last year, a direct result of its sustained network resiliency efforts, tighter security measures, and strengthened partnerships with communities and local government units (LGUs). The improvement underscores the success of Globe’s Fiber Cut Task Force (FCTF), a cross-functional initiative launched in 2024 to address the rising number of fiber cuts that previously affected customer connectivity and experience. “The improvements demonstrate Globe’s commitment to ensuring a consistent and reliable network for all our customers,” said Joel Agustin, Senior Vice President and Head of Service Planning and Engineering. “A reliable network is essential to support the country’s growing digital economy, and these results affirm that our proactive approach is delivering measurable results.” Fortified Infrastructure, Proactive Maintenance Since its inception, the task force has implemented key measures to prevent fiber disruptions such as enhancing cable layout design methodology to ensure existing and upcoming aerial and underground fiber layout are resilient against roadworks and external threats.  Globe also rolled out infrastructure fortification projects, completing 1,500 kms of underground fiber facilities nationwide.  This helped prevent more than 192 fiber cut incidents and network disruptions. Through its proactive preventive maintenance in high-risk or “chronic” grids, Globe was able to reduce up to  93% in recurring incidents across monitored areas. Cable theft and pilferage remain top causes of intentional fiber cuts. Globe has taken a two-pronged approach focused on community protection and partnership. Through the CCTV deterrent program, live CCTV cameras were installed in theft-prone areas like Brgy. Tatalon, Quezon City which led to an 80% drop in incidents, prompting expansion to other parts of Quezon City, Manila, Pasig, and Makati. Globe also worked closely with local officials to roll out livelihood and wellness programs for communities previously vulnerable to cable theft, turning deterrence into sustainable community engagement. “The telco landscape is shifting, and we need hyperfocused, proactive measures to safeguard our infrastructure,” Agustin said. “Our collaboration with the communities and LGUs, plus our preventive maintenance programs are helping ensure a more stable, secure network for customers nationwide.” Keeping Customers Connected Beyond addressing theft and external factors, Globe continues to invest in network resiliency builds which covers 1,200 wireless and broadband nodes and 1,600 kilometers of backbone fiber slated for underground migration. These sustained efforts have helped maintain a consistent network, ensuring customers enjoy consistent connectivity across mobile, broadband, and enterprise services. Globe remains focused on further strengthening its fiber network nationwide, combining engineering precision, community partnership, and proactive maintenance to build a network that keeps the Philippines connected and future-ready.

Globe Business puts renewed emphasis on cyber-resilience in “Technically Speaking”

Business

MANILA, Philippines – In celebration of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Globe Business is reintroducing its flagship thought leadership series, Technically Speaking, with an all-new format and a strong focus on cybersecurity. This series is designed to equip Philippine enterprises with the knowledge and strategies needed to build a secure and resilient future in the face of constant digital disruption and escalating cyber threats. In today’s digital economy, where innovation and risk go hand in hand, Globe Business reminds local enterprises that the greatest competitive advantage is the courage to transform securely. With the Philippine ICT market projected to reach USD 45.67 billion by 2029, the stakes are high. However, a significant readiness gap remains, as only 6% of local enterprises have mature cybersecurity systems. This leaves many vulnerable to threats like phishing and ransomware, which are two of the fastest-growing threats in the country. Globe Business has chosen the podcast medium for this new season of Technically Speaking to create a more personal and accessible experience for business leaders. The long-form, on-demand nature of podcasts allows for in-depth, conversational discussions that go beyond the surface of a typical webinar. This strategic pivot to a more relatable platform is Globe Business’s way of addressing customer concerns and making it easier to integrate critical cybersecurity knowledge into the busy schedules of C-suite executives and senior leaders. The series is hosted by the Business Solutions Consulting team led by Marlon Cruz, AVP for Consulting & Architecture at Globe Business. At its core, his team focuses on solutions consultancy, working directly with enterprises to craft specialized ICT strategies in key areas such as cloud modernization, business solutions applications, data & analytics, and robust connectivity. With security as a non-negotiable core, they focus on helping businesses transform and innovate with confidence. Cruz’s role as host allows him to provide a public preview of the deep, actionable insights his team delivers, reinforcing the value of partnering with Globe Business to address specific challenges. “The reality is that digital growth without cybersecurity is unsustainable,” said Cruz. “Our goal is to equip leaders not just with knowledge, but with a clear roadmap for resilience. By integrating security from the start, enterprises can pursue innovation with confidence, knowing they are prepared for the threats of tomorrow.” Adding to this, KD Dizon, Head of Globe Business, highlights the company’s role as a trusted partner. With unparalleled access to the digital transformation challenges faced by businesses across various industries, including cybersecurity, Globe Business holds a unique vantage point—seeing both the macro trends of the evolving landscape and the granular details of real-world scenarios. This hands-on experience has allowed Globe to develop a wealth of proven solutions, case studies, and best practices that continue to grow, strengthening its credibility. “Our commitment to our partners is to serve as a strategic guide on their journey, fueled by our continuous learning from the field,” said Dizon. “This new podcast format is a direct reflection of that dedication, ensuring we deliver meaningful insights and build a more resilient digital Philippines, one enterprise at a time.” The series kicked off on October 7 with a session on Data Analytics, highlighting how a strong data foundation, when paired with integrated security, enables trusted insights that fuel smarter decisions and sustained growth. The spotlight will turn to Integrated Cyber Resilience on October 16, providing enterprises with the tools to withstand and recover from attacks while protecting customer trust and ensuring business continuity. Future sessions will explore Enterprise AI governance on October 23 and Cloud Modernization on November 12, giving leaders a comprehensive framework for building secure and scalable digital strategies. Globe Business invites enterprises to take part in the remaining Technically Speaking sessions this October and begin charting their path to resilience. Beyond the webinars, organizations are also encouraged to work closely with Globe Business in shaping secure, future-ready strategies that will allow them to thrive in the face of disruption.

Bifrost Cable System achieves Ready for Service status, primed for trans-pacific connectivity

Business

Keppel Ltd. (Keppel) is pleased to announce that the Bifrost Cable System (Bifrost) has officially achieved Ready for Service (RFS) status and will now gear up to carry commercial traffic in the coming weeks.
