Lalamove to set up typhoon relief operations for farmers in Baguio City

Baguio City

BAGUIO CITY — After recently launching its on-demand delivery services in Baguio City, Lalamove has been in talks with the local government to aid over 80 farmers during times of typhoon and produce oversupply. With the support of City Mayor Benjamin “Benjie” Magalong, the leading on-demand delivery platform aims to ensure farmers’ earnings are secured in times of crisis and to reduce produce waste. As a critical hub for the distribution of vegetables from the Cordillera Administrative Region, Baguio City’s farmers are vulnerable to oversupply issues especially during typhoon season and “Ber” months. Lalamove’s aid comes during crucial times when farmers’ produce are left unsold, spoiled, and thrown away, resulting in the farmers’ loss of earnings. According to Djon Nacario, Lalamove Philippines Managing Director, the platform is working hand-in-hand with the Baguio local government to support the farmers’ needs during such incidents. “The agricultural sector is vital to the Philippines. Amid the typhoon season, we have discussed with Mayor Magalong that should the farmers need assistance, Lalamove is ready to rescue-buy their produce, which will be donated to repository markets and communities in need,” explained Nacario. Magalong expressed his support, saying, “Lalamove’s support to the Baguio City farmers cultivates hope and growth for our community, contributing to a more sustainable agricultural sector in the region.” Lalamove is determined to extend this initiative to more farmers and markets across Metro Manila in collaboration with LGUs and other parties interested to serve as repository markets for the rescued produce. “Lalamove is not just about moving goods; it’s about moving lives forward,” said Nacario, adding, “As a testament to our commitment to continuously empower communities, this is just the beginning of the support we aim to provide to Baguio City and to the agricultural sector.”

Globe begins restoration work in typhoon-hit areas

NCR

Outages due to commercial power failure  Globe has begun restoration work in a few areas in Metro Manila and Northern Luzon affected by service disruptions due to commercial power failure following the devastation of Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon. As of 9 a.m. Thursday, over 90% of Globe’s Mobile sites in Metro Manila were up and running, with few facilities down due to power outages. None of the 3G sites were affected. In Northern Luzon, more than 95% of 2G, 3G, LTE and 5G sites were operational. “As the weather has improved and floods have subsided, our personnel are now working on quickly restoring services in the few isolated areas that experienced disruptions in their call, text and data services,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer. Globe has not recorded any damage to network infrastructure. “Overall, our network remains intact and stable, providing communications services critical to relief and recovery operations in typhoon-hit areas. It is proof that our network resilience efforts work,” Crisanto added. Globe earlier prepositioned personnel and equipment in areas forecast to bear the impact of the typhoon and habagat to ensure quick response in case of network emergencies. The weather system, which dumped non-stop rains across Luzon Wednesday, brought catastrophic flooding to major roads and villages in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon. It intensified into a super typhoon Wednesday afternoon before weakening into a typhoon just before making landfall in Taiwan. At the height of the devastation, Globe extended connectivity support to customers, giving Globe Prepaid and TM users free calls, texts and data, and extending due date extension to Mobile and Broadband Postpaid customers. Globe’s telehealth provider KonsultaMD also provided one free video consultation voucher valid for one time use within one month via the code ALAGANGGLOBE. Converge taps Ribbon to deploy cutting-edge optical networking technology

Business

Leading fiber broadband and technology provider Converge ICT Solutions Inc. (PSE: CNVRG)  is collaborating with Nasdaq-listed firm Ribbon Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: RBBN) to pioneer in the Philippines the latter’s leading-edge Apollo optical networking system which will optimize data transmission across the internet provider’s backbone network. Converge is breaking ground on Ribbon’s 5 nanometer (nm) – 140Gbaud transmission chipset that will expand its fiber network capacity from its existing 800 Gigabits per second (Gbps) to 1.2 Terabit per second (Tbps) per channel within the network, offering thrice the needed capacity for hyperscale applications that typically require around 400 Gbps. According to Converge CEO and Co-Founder Dennis Anthony Uy, the said technology will equip its network to meet the increasing demand for large-scale capacity amid the rapid surge in data consumption and acceleration of cloud-native applications and services. “Ribbon’s solution surpasses our stringent requirements for this overlay on our existing backbone, enabling us to set a new standard for innovation. This new technology will bring our customers unprecedented speed and high bandwidth availability amid the growing demand for data-intensive applications,” said Uy. Compared to the existing network technology, Ribbon’s 5-nm chipset delivers superior performance, is more energy efficient, and has better heat management capabilities. This makes it one of the most sustainable technology for optical networks available today. In the long term, these advancements are expected to not only result in significant power and cost savings for Converge but also make its network more efficient as it improves reliability, enhances data transfer speeds, and supports scalability. Likewise, Converge is also leveraging Ribbon’s Muse SDN Domain Orchestration, which provides the necessary toolsets to maximize its network capabilities and ensure peak efficiency with automation, planning, node design, and real-time control. “We’re thrilled to deepen our relationship with Converge ICT with this major new deployment. Coupled with our technology, our local presence and proven round-the-clock after-sales support are key factors in our ability to support Converge ICT as they ramp their network to meet increasing demand for capacity,” said Ribbon COO and EVP Sam Bucci. Texas-based Ribbon Communications Inc. is a global provider of real-time communications technology and IP optical networking solutions to many of the world’s largest service providers, enterprises, and critical infrastructure operators to modernize and protect their networks. The network technology adoption is just one of the several investments Converge made over the years to augment its network infrastructure. In 2021, Converge doubled its metro backbone capacity to 800 Gbps from its previous capacity of 400 Gbps. Recently, Converge also inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with another US-based technology leader Super Micro Computer Inc. to jointly establish AI-powered, green data centers in the Philippines.
