Local fishermen made a firm stand against illegal drugs by surrendering over a billion pesos worth of suspected shabu found floating in the shores of Pangasinan since June 5, 2025. The illegal drug was placed inside a total of 267 transparent plastic packs, weighing roughly 267 kilograms worth a staggering P1,815,600,000. The floating suspected shabu packs were turned over by the fishermen to combined operatives of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Navy (PN) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) with the support from the Local Government Units of Agno, Bani and Bolinao, Pangasinan. The turn-over were done in the coastal barangays of Dacap Sur, Bani, Pangasinan; Boboy, Agno, Pangasinan and Luciente I and Balingasay, both in Bolinao, Pangasinan. “My admiration goes out to the fishermen for their selfless acts of honesty and integrity. They are not after personal gain but rather the greater well-being of society”, said PDEA Director General Undersecretary Isagani R Nerez. PDEA also commends its partner law enforcement agencies such as the PCG under Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan and the PNP under Police General Nicolas Torre III, for their staunch cooperation to avert any attempts to exploit the porous coastlines of the Northern seaboard for drug smuggling. The operation highlights the strong inter-agency collaboration of law enforcement units in carrying out the directives of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure national security through persistent maritime and coastal vigilance. “We are sending a clear message to transnational drug syndicates: our waters are no longer safe havens for their illegal operations. Do not dump poison into our coastal communities. We will hunt you down”, DG Nerez emphasized. PDEA remains firm in its resolve to protect the Filipino people by leading the fight against illegal drugs. The agency will continue to forge partnerships with communities, maritime stakeholders, and other law enforcement agencies to guard the country’s shores against possible entry of illegal drugs. As of press time, the turnover of more suspected shabu packs discovered by local fishermen is still on-going.

SBMA establishes EODB lane for ID processing for SBF locators

Subic Bay Freeport – The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has recently established the Ease of Doing Business (EODB) lane, a special lane dedicated to the batch processing of identification cards for employees and workers here. SBMA Senior Deputy Administrator for Business and Investment Renato Lee III, who recently inspected the agency’s frontline services on May 30 with the SBMA Anti-Red Tape Unit members, also visited the SBMA-Office Services Department (OSD)’s Pass Issuance and Control Division (PICD). To facilitate the efficient processing of SBMA IDs for companies with a large number of employees, the PICD institutionalized batch processing through non-appearance processing for 20 or more applicants or off-site processing for 100 or more applicants. “It only takes 24 minutes per application for both non-appearance processing and off-site processing. Last year, the OSD-PICD was able to process 5,273 applications from various SBF companies through off-site ID processing, and 2,948 applications as of May 2025,” Lee said. “While processing individual applications at the OSD is generally straightforward, the overall processing and waiting tend to increase when applicants come in groups,” he added. Aside from the OSD-PICD, Lee also inspected the Motor Vehicle Registration Office, the Telecommunications Department, the Ecology Department, the Building Permit Department, the Visa Processing Office, the Business Group’s Logistics Department, the Manufacturing and Maritime Department, the Leisure Department, and the Tourism Department. The Anti-Red Tape Unit inspection was accompanied by stakeholders, including the Subic Bay Freeport Chamber of Commerce (SBFCC). It also coincided with EODB month as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s declared May as the Ease of Doing Business (EODB) Month. Lower Magat Eco-Tourism Park set for further development in Nueva Vizcaya

By Rachel Magday Continued development is expected at the Lower Magat Eco-Tourism Park (LMET) in the municipality of Diadi over the next three years, following the recent signing of a special work order plan by Governor Atty. Jose V. Gambito. The signing was witnessed by PENRO Giovannie Magat of DENR-Nueva Vizcaya. This move is a crucial step toward fulfilling the requirements for the Department Administrative Order (DAO) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), which will officially declare Lower Magat as an eco-tourism area. According to Forester Roger Haboc, Environmental Specialist II and Officer-in-Charge of the Forest Conservation and Development Division of PENARO, a completed survey revealed that 400.33 hectares out of the more than 24,000-hectare Lower Magat Forest Reserve will be designated as the tourism area. This area will be managed and further improved by the provincial government. Once the DAO is released, the provincial government will begin crafting the Comprehensive Development Management Plan (CDMP), which will serve as the foundation for all future projects within LMET. Among the anticipated developments are additional accommodation facilities, including a hotel to be constructed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme. Currently, LMET is already one of the leading tourism destinations in Nueva Vizcaya, attracting both local and foreign visitors with its natural beauty and recreational offerings. Significant improvements have already been made in recent years. Under the administration of then Governor Ruth R. Padilla, and continued by the late Governor Carlos M Padilla, the provincial government constructed the LMET Conference Center that can accommodate 1,000 to 1,500 guests, with a total funding of P89 million. An infinity swimming pool was also built with a budget of over P20 million. In addition, the road network within LMET has been fully cemented through the DPWH-DOT convergence program, making the park more accessible to visitors. Governor Gambito expressed optimism about the future of the park, saying, “With these completed and upcoming projects, we are confident that the Lower Magat Eco-Tourism Park will further boost tourism and economic growth in Nueva Vizcaya, while promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development.”

EMA Cup stages 20th edition, celebrates 33 years of existence

By Pigeon Lobien EMA Cup is celebrating its 20th edition, but the fun golf had a much longer history and had supported causes in the three decades it was staged. “It all started in 1992,” said namesake lawyer Edgar M. Avila. He was the Youth Representative to Congress and was behind the construction of the PFVR Youth Center in between the Department of Education – Baguio Division Office and the Quezon Elementary School. Camp John Hay was under then the Bases Conversion Development Authority with Silverio dela Cruz as general manager and the youthful congressman wanted to raise funds “to fund the maintenance of the newly constructed PFVR Youth Center at Upper Session Road.” Actually he was instrumental in putting up the sports/youth facility and named it after then president Fidel V. Ramos which “was a sports center, recreational hall, an everlasting legacy then Cong Ed wanted to leave for the people of Baguio where he was born and raised. It now stands as a symbol for his belief in serving from the heart.” The one-day fun tournament of the Rotary Club Downtown Session Charter President was formalized fiver years later with the staging of the 1st EMA CUP Golf Tournament on February 16, 1997 at the Camp John Hay Golf Course with the PFVR and Action Inc., a Baguio Based Communication Group, as beneficiary. Through the golf event, four ambulances were acquired through the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and were distributed to the Baguio General Hospital Medical Center with two, and one each for the Rotary and the Action Inc., while the latter also got one emergency tow-truck. Some 200 golfers joined the very first EMA Cup with the late President Ramos, the First Lady Amelita Ramos and top officials of Baguio and Benguet as guests. The cup would become an annual sporting event that attracted various personalities including then President Gloria Arroyo, House Speaker Jose C. de Venecia, vice president Jojemar Binay, Sen. Bong Revilla and then Sen Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. among others. It is in fact the very first golf for a cause event staged by a local, much older than the annual Domogan Cup, by congressman-elect Mauricio Domogan or the Bishop Cup, which the late Baguio-Benguet bishop Carlito Cenzon started that raised funds for the construction or improvement of churches in Baguio and Benguet, Avila said. The 20th Edition of the EMA CUP, in a briefer given by the RCDS “would benefit of the various projects” of the civic organization now headed by President Ryan Gumaya and the St. Theresa of Avila Foundation. The expected player-participants registered so far come all the way from Laguna, Manila and of course the Baguio-Benguet Area, the club added. The golf for a cause will “augment the funding of their present and forthcoming medical missions, feeding programs, scholarship programs, and other worthy projects which they have been undertaking for the past years.” It will also provide school toilets, water system in Itogon, to stage medical missions in Kibungan and other parts of Benguet, as well as blood-letting activities, wheelchair -giving, college scholars. The club said that at one point, it was able to raise some P5 million which was given to the BGHMC to provide dialysis for patients with renal problems. The fun golf on June 7 at the PInewood Golf and Country Club will have a ‬ ‭2025 Toyota Vios 1.3‬ as grand prize during the ‭Grand Raffle in the awards ceremony. Other prizes include a 3 days-2 nights stay at the Fairways & Bluewater in Boracay (exclusive of airfare); a Mastiff 125 cc motorcycle; two airline tickets for Hongkong, via Hongkong Express (exclusive of hotel accommodation) and 10 consolation prizes. BCPO intensifies implementation of King of the Road ordinance in Baguio

BAGUIO CITY – The Baguio City Police reported a total of 305 apprehensions in violation of King of the Road ordinance from May 29, 2025 to June 5, 2025. In its continuous efforts to strengthen traffic law enforcement and promote public safety within the city, Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) launched OPLAN D.R.I.V.E in support of the King of the Road Ordinance. Relatedly, OPLAN D.R.I.V.E. centers on the 3 E’s-Engineering, Enforcement, and Education that aims to promote road safety, discipline, and reduce vehicular traffic incidents in the city. Before the operationalization of this initiative, enforcers were provided with a clear operational guideline on how the City Ordinance of Baguio (COB) No. 7, series of 2010 otherwise known as the King of the Road Ordinance will be implemented. Salient provisions of the ordinance are the mandatory five-second full stop before pedestrian lanes, the strict prohibition against obstructing any portion of pedestrian lanes, the corresponding penalties for violators, and the requirement for offenders to attend mandatory seminars. City Director, Col. Ruel Tagel stressed the vital role of traffic law enforcement in safeguarding lives, he also pointed out that maintaining order and road safety is a shared responsibility of motorists, partner agencies, and pedestrians. “Every responsible action on the road counts. Company pushes forward on its Net Zero goals through strategic renewable energy sourcin In celebration of World Environment Day, Globe is charging ahead on its climate action goals by expanding its use of clean energy to power a total of 33 high-energy utilization sites — and marking a significant milestone with the company’s first-ever batch of renewable energy-powered sites in Mindanao. This marks another step forward in Globe’s mission to decarbonize its operations and champion sustainability, one site at a time. “Renewable energy has been a real, operational commitment for us for the past six years,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at Globe. “Each site we shift to clean power isn’t just about reducing emissions – it’s about building a future-proof network that puts people and planet first.” Through its partnerships with licensed Retail Electricity Suppliers (RES), Globe is sourcing energy from off-site solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal plants through the electricity grid under the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) and the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP). As of the moment, GEOP can be tapped for facilities with a monthly average peak demand of 100 kilowatts or greater, and RCOA for those with 500 kilowatts or greater. These allow high-energy utilization sites and facilities to directly contract with retail electricity suppliers of renewable electricity. As a result, the share of renewable energy in Globe’s overall electricity consumption grew from 14% in 2021 to 24% in 2024. This includes the company’s corporate offices and mixed-use facilities, which are now also powered by clean energy. Over the next two years, Globe plans to power more than 150 sites with renewable energy through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), on-site solarization, as well as leveraging the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP). The RAP is a scheme where two or more end-users with installed meters within a contiguous area are joined together to share the benefits of the RCOA program. These initiatives further deepen the company’s commitment to decarbonization and the clean energy transition. These initiatives support the company’s Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved commitment: to reduce Scopes 1 and 2 emissions by 42% and cut Scope 3 emissions by 25% in 2030, based on the 2021 baseline. By 2050, the company aims to reduce absolute emissions across all three scopes by 90%. Globe’s efforts also support the Philippines’ Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement by helping increase demand for clean energy and reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

36,000 Benguet voters ask Comelec to proclaim Yap

Eric Yap as winner of the May 12 elections with the Commission on Elections – Cordillera Wednesday, June 4, prior they submit the same with the national office tomorrow. “It is a call to proclaim Cong. Yap as congressman to assure our province mates that we have a duly elected congressman,” said lead convenor Gary Abela carrying the 9-inch duplicate of the manifesto signed by resident voters from the 13 municipalities before submitting same with the Comelec -Cordilkera Wednesday afternoon. The signatures were gathered in a week-long campaign that started with a full pack rally at the La Trinidad parking lot behind the municipal hall last May 28. “It was made by then, done by them asking the Comelec to proclaim Yap,” said lawyer Francis Ray Camtugan, representing the convenors. Camtugan said that the manifesto is to help fast track the resolution of the seven cases of disqualification against Yap who defeated Vice Gov Ericson Felipe by more than 80,000 vites. “We will submit it (original) tomorrow with the national Comelec,” he added. Camtugan said that it will be the “comments be part of the records to resolve (the seven) cases. It is their sentiment (they want) to be part of the records,” Camtugan added. Some seven cases of disqualification had been filed against Yap including issues on citizenship and vote buying, among others. Camtugan pleaded with those behind the cases to accept the result of the election where Yap garnered 144,093 votes against the 62,371 of Felipe.
