Cycling is healthy and should be practiced through enabling environment – DoH & WHO

NCR

The Department of Health (DOH), in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), calls on Filipinos to adopt cycling as a regular mode of transportation for its health benefits. During the National Bike to Work Day celebration earlier today, November 29, DOH urged different local governments to create a health-enabling environment that supports cycling infrastructure, road safety, and access to green spaces. A recent survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) found that 36% of Filipino households in 2023 use bicycles for various activities, with one in every three households having at least one cyclist. The same survey revealed that 24% of cyclists use bicycles for essential activities like commuting to work. Furthermore, there are four bicycle owners for every car owner in the country—a trend consistent since 2020. These findings underscore cycling’s growing role as a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and healthy alternative for transportation. As part of the BiyaHealthy campaign, the DOH and WHO highlight the significant benefits of cycling for personal health and environmental sustainability. Cycling helps reduce carbon footprints, lower transportation costs, and improve physical and mental well-being. It is an effective way to lower the risk of lifestyle-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Both organizations encourage Filipinos to adopt active transportation practices to promote better health outcomes, reduce chronic disease risks, and lower healthcare costs. “The WHO strongly supports the promotion of active transportation such as cycling, as it contributes to both individual health and the environment. By encouraging more people to cycle to work, we not only reduce traffic congestion and air pollution but also create healthier, more resilient communities. The shift towards cycling represents an important step in building a sustainable future and promoting public health in the Philippines,” expressed WHO Representative to the Philippines, Dr. Rui Paulo De Jesus. Under Presidential Proclamation No. 409 signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., the last working day of November each year, is officially recognized as National Bike-to-Work Day to emphasize the importance of bike-friendly environments. This includes advocating for policies for safe and protected bike lanes and the development of bike parking spaces, as well as initiatives that educate all road users about respecting cyclists as road users. Both agencies also urge employers to support cycling employees by providing bike racks, showers, and safe storage spaces, fostering a healthier workforce to honor Filipino workers who choose bicycles as their primary mode of transportation.

Baguio City

“They should try to settle the difference. There are more important matters they can give their time and energy into,” he said in ilocano during a mini press conference in Baguio on Thursday, November 28.

SMC warns against fraud, solicitations from fake providers for Luzon projects

Business

WARNING has been raised by San Miguel Corporation (SMC) against unscrupulous individuals presenting themselves as “accredited” suppliers with “valid” contracts — only to solicit money and defraud interested suppliers. The company said it has received reports that in recent months, certain individuals posing as middlemen or representatives of the company have been peddling spurious supply deals supposedly for San Miguel projects in Central and Northern Luzon. These scams have been monitored in Bulacan, Tarlac, and Pangasinan, among other provinces. The fraudsters reportedly solicit money from businesses interested in supplying materials to SMC projects, in exchange for securing supply contracts for various projects. In a statement, SMC advised the public that the company and its subsidiaries conduct business exclusively with suppliers accredited by its Corporate Procurement Group. It also stressed that as a matter of policy, suppliers and bidders–including prospective ones seeking accreditation–are never required to make any payment in order to be accredited or participate in any bidding by the San Miguel Group. The company advises prospective suppliers to avoid unauthorized dealings and potential fraud by directing all questions to its official email, smc_cpgsupport@sanmiguel.com.ph. For added security, this email address will only receive messages or inquiries. The company stressed it will not respond to questions via this or any other email address, or through social media or text messaging. Potential suppliers are advised to include their phone contact information.

Comelec disqualifies Yap namesake

CAR

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet — The Commission on Election Second Division recently granted a petition declaring Congressional candidate Adam Yap as a nuisance candidate citing his apparent lack of genuine intent to actively engage in the election process as candidate. Benguet Cong. Eric Go Yap, who filed the petition, said his namesake maliciously filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) and merely put the election process in mockery or disrepute and to cause confusion among voters. “I had to file a petition to declare Mr. Adam Yap as a nuisance candidate because I received reports of what transpired that prompted him to file his candidacy and I thank the COMELEC for seeing the merits of my petition,” said the solon. In granting the petition, Comelec said nuisance candidates are persons who file their certificates of candidacy to put the election process in mockery or disrepute or to cause confusion among voters by the similarity of the names of the registered candidates or by other circumstances and that the candidate has no bonafide intention to run for the office. Comelec also noted that Adam Yap has the same surname with the incumbent district representative of Benguet, and there is an inherent risk that voters may mistakenly associate him with Cong. Eric Go Yap which could lead to distorted voting behavior. “Hindi po ako galit at wala po tayo sama ng loob kay Mr. Adam Yap, in fact, some of the members of his family reached out to me and apologized. Wala pong dapat ihingi ng tawad dahil biktima lang rin po si Adam Yap ng ilang tao na may mga political agenda,” said the lawmaker Yap. The poll body meanwhile said the likelihood of voter misapprehension is not only theoretical but is supported by empirical evidence in previous elections where confusion over candidates with the same surnames has led to votes being misplaced or casted erroneously. Comelec added such instances not only compromise the integrity of the elections but also diminish the public’s trust and confidence in the electoral system. “I received reports from trusted sources na si Adam Yap daw was approached by two people. They convinced him to file for Congressman with the intention to confuse the voters, syempre nga naman we share the same last name tapos mauuna pa sya sa akin sa balota alphabetically. We must remember, shading na po ang ballots so walang ma-credit sa akin pag siya ang naiboto because of confusion,” added Cong. Yap. “I denounce these actions, strategies, whatever they want to call it. Let us respect the electoral process and let the will of the people prevail. The ruling also said the circumstances shows Adam Yap’s certificate of candidacy for member of the House of Representative in the May 12, 2025 National and Local Election is denied or cancelled.
