P20-M PSC grant boosts athletes quarters project

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Mayor Benjamin Magalong expressed his gratitude for the ₱20 million funding support from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), led by Chairman John Patrick “Pato” Gregorio, saying that it will help complete the city’s athletes’ quarters, a project that had previously faced funding shortages.

Magalong also shared that the city has submitted a proposed ₱50 million program of work to the Philippine Sports Commission.

The proposal includes the rehabilitation of the swimming pool at the Athletic Bowl and the installation of a heating facility to improve training conditions for swimmers.

Plans are also underway to develop the city’s athletic bowl into a regional training center, creating more opportunities for both local and national athletes and strengthening sports development efforts across the region.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman John Patrick “Pato” Gregorio visited Baguio City and reaffirmed his strong commitment to sports development and youth empowerment.

During the Flag Raising Ceremony held on June 8, 2026, at Baguio City Hall, Chairman Gregorio delivered an inspiring message highlighting Baguio’s role as a transformative city and a model for sports excellence in the Philippines.

In support to the city’s dedication to athletics and sports development, the Philippine Sports Commission donated ₱20 million to support Baguio City’s sports programs and initiatives.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, together with other city officials, formally received the check on behalf of the city government.

The funding will help enhance local sports facilities, nurture aspiring athletes, and further strengthen Baguio’s position as a premier sports tourism and training destination.

In addition to the financial assistance, the PSC also donated basketballs and volleyballs for distribution to barangays, reinforcing its mission of bringing sports closer to communities and creating more opportunities for young Filipinos to participate in sports and physical activities.

This support underscores the PSC’s commitment to empowering local government units and investing in grassroots sports development. Through continued collaboration and investment, Baguio City remains a shining example of excellence in Philippine sports and youth development. – Ariel Biala
