From Personal Experience to a Physician’s Calling: The story of Cindy May Lapurga Calimlim

When illness strikes a loved one, the search for medical care can become a race against uncertainty. For Cindy May Lapurga Calimlim, the COVID-19 pandemic brought this reality closer to home when some of her relatives fell ill and her family encountered difficulties accessing hospital services. What she witnessed deepened her understanding of the importance of accessible healthcare and strengthened her resolve to become a physician who could make a difference in the lives of others.

At 30 years old, Cindy hails from Barangay Salvacion, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. She is the daughter of Mr. Jovy Pontino Calimlim and Mrs. Teodora Lapurga Calimlim, whose family roots are in Barangay Sawmill, Villaverde.

Before pursuing medicine, Cindy was already working as a registered medical technologist at Dañguilan Clinic and Veterans Regional Hospital. Her experience in the healthcare field, along with her aspiration to become an instructor, reflects her commitment to professional growth and sharing her knowledge with others.

Her family’s experience during the pandemic gave Cindy a more personal perspective on the challenges patients faces when medical attention is difficult to obtain. She came to appreciate that being a physician requires not only medical expertise but also compassion and empathy, qualities that help patients feel heard, respected, and understood during difficult moments.

In November 2023, Cindy took a significant step toward realizing her dream when she applied for and was accepted into the Provincial Government of Nueva Vizcaya’s Doktor Ti Umili Scholarship Program. The opportunity supported her pursuit of medical education and brought her closer to the profession she had long worked toward.

Her perseverance culminated in a milestone worth celebrating…passing the 2026 Physician Licensure Examination.

This achievement marks not only the fulfillment of a personal goal but also the beginning of a new chapter in which she can apply her knowledge and skills to address the healthcare needs of others.

Looking at the challenges facing the healthcare sector, Doctor Cindy recognizes the shortage of doctors willing to serve underserved communities as a pressing concern. She also believes that scholarship programs play an important role in helping aspiring physicians achieve their dreams while encouraging them to contribute to areas where access to medical services remains limited.

Beyond fulfilling her return service agreement, Doctor Cindy hopes to bring medical services closer to the far-flung communities of Nueva Vizcaya, where distance and limited resources can make consultations difficult. Through proper time management and dedication to her responsibilities, she intends to help fill the gap between these communities and the healthcare they deserve.

Doctor Cindy’s journey shows how personal experiences can give greater meaning to a professional calling. With the support of the Doktor Ti Umili Scholarship Program, she has transformed her aspiration into an achievement and is now preparing to take on the responsibilities of being a physician.

With her dream of becoming a physician now realized, Doctor Cindy carries with her the knowledge gained through years of study and a firsthand understanding of the challenges families face when seeking medical care. Her goal is to become a physician who combines medical competence with genuine concern for every patient, particularly those in communities where healthcare services are less accessible.

For Doctor Cindy May Lapurga Calimlim, becoming a doctor is more than achieving a lifelong dream. It is an opportunity to turn a personal experience into a purposeful commitment to bringing quality healthcare closer to the people of Nueva Vizcaya.

“Not just a dream anymore. This coat holds my story – of faith, failure, friendship, and fight.

By His grace, not just my strength. All glory to God.” Cindy Calimlim, RMT,MD
