BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Baguio-born Filipino motorsport standout Inigo Anton continues to make his mark on the international racing scene after securing a remarkable podium finish during the competitive debut of the Proton S70 race car in the top-tier class of the Malaysian Touring Car Championship at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.
Anton, a multi-titled young racing champion, teamed up with Malaysian co-driver Azriel Azhar behind the wheel of the newly developed Proton S70 race car, fielded by Axle Motorsport, founded by former Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong. Their campaign provided another opportunity for Anton to proudly represent the Philippines on the international stage.
The podium finish highlighted Anton’s adaptability and racecraft as he helped bring the brand-new touring car straight to the podium in its highly competitive debut weekend, backed by Motul.
The Proton S70 race car is powered by a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder turbo engine designed for top-level competition. It was re-engineered and built under the guidance of Axle Motorsport, with full technical support from Proton.
The new machine faced an intense test against seasoned competitors in the premier MT1600 Class, yet demonstrated impressive pace, consistency and mechanical reliability throughout the weekend despite making its competitive racing debut.
Anton’s precise car control and racecraft also enabled the team to gather valuable data for the continued development of the car as it prepares for upcoming endurance challenges, including the Sepang 1000-kilometer race scheduled in the coming weekend.
Anton continues to develop as one of Southeast Asia’s promising young racers under the guidance and coaching of former F1 driver Alex Yoong.
“It’s an honor to be able to debut the Proton S70 race car in the top class of the Malaysian Touring Car Championship. We got to show that this car can run consistently and reliably throughout,” Anton said.
