BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — The Saint Louis University (SLU) Cubs Under-16 boys basketball team, representing the Philippines, captured the championship of the 2026 World Youth Championship (WYC) held Aug. 6 to 9 in Singapore.
Playing under National Basketball League Baguio, the Cubs completed an unbeaten campaign, defeating Greater Basketball Academy (GBA) in the opening round and Riptide Elite in the semifinals to advance to the championship game.
The Baguio-based squad then dominated the MGM Lions, 54-32, in the finals, combining tight defense with an efficient offensive attack to secure the international title.
Leading the Cubs’ championship run was Joseph Olarte Obata Jr., who was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) after he led the team in scoring and delivered crucial defensive stops throughout the four-day competition.
The Cubs were coached by Mark Benedict Llaguna, with Angelo Labrador and Christopher Castaneda serving as assistant coaches.
